It's in the Group Standards, New stock on the main line (and these would not count as previously used) must have a separate door for the driver to access the track away from any passengers. Look at the 444s and 175s as an example.

The Sprinters and Pacers were built before the requirement. hence drivers must use a passenger door to access the track...

What adjacent door? the only side doors on 67/72 stock are in the passenger saloon

Surely the 'M' door (door at the front of the cab) satisfies this requirement?

The 'M' door is not permitted to be used to access the track in non-emergency (signal telephone) use. Only when after an emergency ladder has been deployed.
