Just thinking of fleets that our getting older. FCC which until last year was all ex-br will be getting much older with the extra 313s and 321s but probably offset by the 377s. Southerns will be going up as well as the 313s arrive. I guess northerns will increase as the 150s appear. Do the mk2s count for scotrail as they are hired?

Excellent, some proper figures :D

Looks like my hastily knocked up spreadsheets were pretty close, that's a relief :)

And I concede that it would seem that Southeastern are lower than Southern, but only by a whisker ;)

When I was growing up, living in Cheshunt, I remember being so proud of the fact that we had such modern trains (well, the 317s were modern when they were introduced - back when I was a teenager in the late 1980s) so I guess that by getting new trains ahead of some other regions, that still had slam door trains, both the former Wagn routes now have some very old trains, as shown by the NXEA and FCC figures.

So, out of the twenty TOCs listed (ignoring Gatwick Express, since there is only one figure), only three have got younger fleets in 09/10 than they had in 07/08?

Eightyfive percent of TOCs having older fleets isn't a great stat :|

(Cheers for the figures though Dennis - am not shooting the messanger!)

Yes, London Overground will shortly be the youngest by a long shot without any need for maths skills to work that out, not sure why I haven't put it on the list really.

Nah! ScotRail will have that trounced when the new 380s are introduced after the reopening of the Airdrie - Bathgate line.

obviously fleets will be getting older as there is very little new rolling stock,
what new trains have FGW had to bring their average age down? they got rid of the adelantes which were their newest trains, so with them goen the average should of gone up not down!

FGW are getting 150s to replace 142s, which are around the same age. FGW were due to get 11 x 4 car brand new Turbostars - whether the new government has axed that or not is a different question.

Northern will see a significant increase in the age of their fleet in the next two years with 142s replacing 180s and 150s replacing 156s.

but these figures were based on the stock at end of 2009, which the 142s were still with FGW

If the class 377/5s are discounted (as they really belong to Southern) and excluding the former WAGN part of FCC the class 319s used on the old Thameslink routes are all over 20 years old, with the youngest built in 1990 and the oldest in 1987. Recent "refreshment" can't hide the fact either.

Yeah, I didn't "get" that - to go from 26.70 to 23.76 in a year seemed odd, unless its for the Heathrow 360s?

The pacers are a lot younger than the hst. But they are such a small part of the fleet the wouldn't make that much difference.

Perhaps in FGW land when they reformed some of the 158's to /9s they were counted as new units!

Or less units (3x2car become 2x3car) when combined with Pacers, would the ATW long term hires count towards their total, that's another 5 80s units.
