Today marks the Tōkaidō Shinkansen becoming the first high speed railway in the world to achieve 50 years of service since it opened on 1 October 1964.

The Tōkaidō Shinkansen was the first high speed railway, and for the whole of those 50 years it has stood head and shoulders above every other high speed railway in the world for patronage - a running total of 5.6 billion passengers now.

Congratulations to JR Central on this achievement.

Agreed - over on this side of the world we tend to forget where HSR really started....

They showed us that electrics could go very slightly (only a few mph) faster than Mallard. ;)

Congratulations to them, all the same.
