Opera Browser, lost bookmarks!

I had all my bookmarks nicely organised in their tiles on the front page. However, after noon today noticed they'd all gone, and Opera had decided to replace their old browser with a new one, meaning I had lost everything saved and had to start from fresh; there is "synchronisation" but thy only works (I think) with other browsers, not their older version.

So every single bookmark I'd saved had gone, however I had backed up my bookmarks on an SD card so at least they were all saved and could be re-applied, mainly in case of PC failure.

Would help if browsers indicated in advance that they were gonna alter everything and advise to back up your bookmarks etc!!

Anyone else on Opera noticed this, or is it just me and I'd clicked somewhere unwittingly??
