Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone could answer what signal sighting competency is? It’s a requirement along with train driving but other than passing a standard eyesight test I’ve never heard of this type of competency before.

When signal alterations take place or there's some other need to review the placement of a signal (eg after some SPADs), a signal sighting exercise will take place to review the various risks associated with a signal and things which may affect the time a Driver will need to see it. NR run training courses on signal sighting for people to sit as part of those signal sighting committees, which is what the competence refers to.

Someone who's done a signal sighting course can probably tell you in more detail the specifics of what is covered on them.

Assuming you are applying for a job that requires this?

Its pretty self explanatory signal sighting courses look at how signals are placed and looks into how they are viewed by drivers, how long they're viewed for etc.

Signal sighting committees are needed any time someone wants to change or move a signal or even change things around a signal that might affect its sighting. It's a specialist role and one of those things where if you don't know anything about it, it's not worth applying.
