That's daft, when there is an alternative direct train service from Chester to Manchester on the CLC line.

I was thinking that too.

Edit: CLC isn't an alternative due to this: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=138492

On another note looking thought RTT it seems it happened prior to midnight as that is the first train that was due though and it got cancelled. Nothing else showing on RTT so must have been an engineering train related to the cord works that we conducted over the weekend.

Cant get to chester via CLC. Not without reversing at LPY.

Derailment was at ordsall. Effectively blocked chat moss from both Vicc and Picc and anything from Picc northwest. VICC to salford and picc to warrington unaffected. Severe disruption to TPE northwest and liverpool services although lines opened 08:15

Ordsall Lane just reopened, but still plenty of disruption.
(first train through at 0817 on RTT).

Knutsford route still blocked apparently after yesterday's train fire.
Buses Northwich-Altrincham.
The term CLC covers mid-Cheshire route as well as route via Warrington Central.
It was all the Cheshire Lines Committee.

Appears to be an Engineer's train according to BBC News

Train derailment causes delays to rail passengers in North West
A derailed engineering train has caused huge disruption to rail travellers in the North West.
The train's wheels came off the tracks at Ordsall Lane junction in Eccles, Salford, just after 01:00 GMT.
Trains to and from Manchester Airport were cancelled while services to Scotland via Preston were also hit.
The line was re-opened at 08:00 GMT but Network Rail said that "widespread" problems would continue until 13:00 GMT.
Replacement buses had to be used as the problems affected Arriva Trains Wales, Northern and Transpennine services.
Routes between Manchester and Bolton, Wigan, Chester and Liverpool were all severely affected.
Engineers re-railed the train at 04:00 GMT but work on the tracks took another four hours, causing significant delays.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: "This work had to be completed to ensure the track was safe for trains to run on, but unfortunately this caused severe delays for rush-hour customers."
Trains between Manchester and Liverpool started running at 08:00 GMT, while Virgin Train services also resumed to Scotland but with delays.

Would assume the affected train was the previous day's 2301 Salford Crescent to Crewe Bas Hall S.S.M. which passed Salford Crescent 351 minutes late at 0452 and had no further reports. Possibly shifted to Brindle Heath sidings, since there was a 6Y56 1415 Pendleton (Brindle Heath) to Crewe Bas Hall S.S.M. added to the short term plan.

Also seemed to impact Liverpool - Scarborough service even although it doesn't pass Ordsall Lane Junction. I assume this was due to congestion around Manchester. 8.30(ish) arrival into Scarborough was 20 mins late arriving just before 8.50 departure time. Full marks to TPE crew they turned it round in about 3 minutes, we were leaving Scarborough about 8.53. Next service was turned at Malton

I had a 10.20 flight to Atlanta. Caught the 06.41 ex Preston a 156. Then changed at Bolton into a packed liked sardines 142/150 4 car hybrid to Victoria. Tram to Piccadilly which was so crowded there was a 10 minute delay as it could not get up the slope. Then got a 319 all stations Piccadilly to MIA - made it. If you include the subway at ATL and the car journey to PRE station - that is a lot of variety for one day.

That the Scarborough trains interwork with the Newcastle ones at Lime Street has something to do with it.
