1. Can I use a contactless card (touch in/out) fro St Pancras - Stratford International by HST? It seems so but just want to make sure!

2. Can someone touch in at (say) Euston Square, spend an hour riding the tube and then get "off" at Euston Square? Would that count as one journey and be charged appropriately, what if other zones were travelled in?
If that can't be done (and what would stop you??) - is the only alternative a travelcard?

Cheers!

1) Yes, Oyster is accepted on Southeastern's High Speed services (a special rate applies)

2) As far as I'm aware, no you cannot because Oyster is based on making Point to Point journeys. A travelcard is your answer.

Thanks and thanks! **NB by *Oyster* I assume you mean cantactless is also accepted?
Don't suppose anyone knows the tube contactless (return) price Euston/Stratford? Don't think the StP>Str Int fare is much more than £7 and much, much quicker (ie more drinking time @ destination!!)

To find out single fares using Oyster/contactless, the TfL single fare finder is always a good start.

Here, Euston to Stratford by underground is £2.90 in the weekday morning and evening peaks, and £2.40 at all other times.

As regards your Euston Square to Euston Square query, you will get charged two maximum fares, but if you spent up to 90 minutes (weekday daytimes: longer at other times) going from Euston Square to e.g. Kings Cross St Pancras, and at all times staying within the zones, you would be charged just one Zone 1 to Zone 1 fare (£2.40) on oyster/contactless.

The answer is in our Fares & Ticketing Guide. If there is more than 30 minutes between touches, the system assumes that you have made two incomplete journeys and charges you two maximum fares. Neither journey counts towards the daily cap.

Just used that, thanks for the link, the return is £4.80 so I'll use the train. Put St P to Str Int on that farefinder and that also comes to 4.80, which I understand would be too cheap for the HST which was just under £7 (ret) last time I used it?

If you use the single fare finder for journeys from St Pancras International (national rail) to Stratford International (national rail) you are given oyster/contactless single fares of £5.40 peak and £3.80 offpeak for travel on Southeastern highspeed trains.

A paper super offpeak day return would be £7.70 (so 10p more than 2 x £3.80), a paper offpeak day return would be £9.30 (so 10p more than £5.40 + £3.80) and a paper anytime day return would be £10.90 (so 10p more than 2 x £5.40).

If that journey is ever considered on an HST, please let me know. External observation along HS1? Yes please!

You definately can use a contactless card to make that journey ( I did it myself last week!) just one thing to be aware of and that you can only use 1 card per person travelling...so if you're with someone else they will also need a contactless card or Oyster as you can't pay for more than 1 person at the same time on the same card.

It's extreme HS compared to the tube!!

Interesting, didn't know you could pair up one card in such a way. However, I'm Billy Nomates on this trip. But I'll still get it wrong. What's the maximum they can charge if I forget to tap in, out, or both

I am not sure what the maximum fare is... But I've never ever seen the HS gateline unmanned....always someone (in fact usually quite a few people) there as I'm guessing SET don't want anyone travelling on their glorious High speed trains for "free" :)

The maximum fare depends on where your unmatched touch in/out takes place, but starts at £7.70 (peak) or £5.30 (offpeak) for a station in Zones 1 to 9, and rises to £14 for a peak unmatched touch in/out at Gatwick Airport. A maximum fare does not use up any part of the daily cap.

What happens when a guard comes round to check your ticket on this train? Does he look at your contactless card? Can he swipe it? How can he tell you've tapped in??

I think you misread what blakey1152 said.

The maximum fare is currently up to £8.90 (or up to £14.00 for an incomplete journey to/from Gatwick Airport).

There are no guards on HS1.

I'd beg to argue that this technical inaccuracy does not detract from the clarity of the question that is posed. There remains a member of staff onboard these services whom remains Customer Service and Revenue focused.

I'll answer on the basis on a revenue inspection anywhere where Oyster or contactless are accepted, not just HS1.

The inspector will hold a reader over the card. If it is a valid/working contactless payment card then the reader will confirm this. That is all the inspector can know at the time. If it isn't a working card or has been blacklisted then the reader will alert the inspector and you will be treated as if you have no ticket. If it is a valid card then the card details are transfered to the central Oyster system later on. Once the central system is happy that all appropriate touches have been passed to it it will compare revenue checks with whether you were in the system or not. If you aren't then you are charged a maximum fare. If you do it 3 times then your card is blacklisted.
