if you have a travelcard on oyster and a paper extension ticket. Your ticket gets inspected outside your travelcard zones and you present both your paper extension and travelcard on oyster and the oyster is scanned using a reader, how does the scanner know that you also have a valid paper extension? I believe touching in/out at the london station your travelcard is valid in is the correct way to travel using travelcard on oyster and paper extension. However I have read on this forum that these readers can charge maximum fares?

You can't be charged maximum fares when you have a travelcard, the system assumes that any incomplete journeys are within the covered zones or continuing on another ticket. Therefore the scanner doesn't need to know anything, it's up to the inspector to manually check that there isn't a gap between the end of the travelcard and start of the paper ticket.

So the reader just tells the inspector what zones you have and whether it’s in date? And then they can match it up to the paper extension?
