I am new to the forum and from the US. Is the Oyster Card used or accepted on any of the commuter railroads? If so, do they still use on-board checking or just validators at stations. Thanks
An oyster card is a medium which is accepted anywhere that the ticket held on it is valid, irrespective of whether there are validators or not. So a 7 day Travelcard season is valid anywhere in the Travelcard area. If the operator does not yet have validators, then that's
their problem.
However, 'Pay as you go' (PAYG) on Oyster is not yet available throughout London, as posted earlier it will be available on all routes in the London area from 02 January (see map posted by SWT Driver). In the mean time, as CCF23 says it is available throughout the tube, DLR, buses, etc plus the National Rail routes shown on this map:

Be careful using PAYG. If you fail to 'touch out' you will be charged the maximum cash fare, even if you have reached the cap!! This is a huge money-making scam that over 8 million people fall victim to each year (
source ) A member of this forum touched the "wrong type of validator" (:roll

at Paddington, he thought he was touching out of the H&C line but the validator counted him as touching into National Rail, and he fell victim to the scam. It can happen to anyone. Fortunately he was able to get his money back after faffing about with a 'phone call.
Most fares for journeys commencing after 0930 are set to rise after the introduction of Oyster on National Rail, so it's not all good news (unless you're TfL's bank manager!)

I like the fact that they've separated the services from King's Cross and Moorgate along the FCC GN route. That will make it very easy to swap one to London Overground in the future! I think there other lines that look like candidates too!
That's ridiculous, as at peak time there are trains on the supposedly Moorgate-only line! Not to mention weekends... TfL must assume people only travel between 0930 and 1600 Mondays-Fridays. They've made a map look more complicated, and for absolutely no gain whatsoever - all it does is make unsuspecting passengers think there are no direct trains from KGX to places like Hertford, when in fact there's a chance there will be. Numpties!
