I am new to the forum and from the US. Is the Oyster Card used or accepted on any of the commuter railroads? If so, do they still use on-board checking or just validators at stations. Thanks

I like the fact that they've separated the services from King's Cross and Moorgate along the FCC GN route. That will make it very easy to swap one to London Overground in the future! I think there other lines that look like candidates too!

An oyster card is a medium which is accepted anywhere that the ticket held on it is valid, irrespective of whether there are validators or not. So a 7 day Travelcard season is valid anywhere in the Travelcard area. If the operator does not yet have validators, then that's their problem.

However, 'Pay as you go' (PAYG) on Oyster is not yet available throughout London, as posted earlier it will be available on all routes in the London area from 02 January (see map posted by SWT Driver). In the mean time, as CCF23 says it is available throughout the tube, DLR, buses, etc plus the National Rail routes shown on this map: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/tickets/oyster-payg-on-national-rail.pdf

Be careful using PAYG. If you fail to 'touch out' you will be charged the maximum cash fare, even if you have reached the cap!! This is a huge money-making scam that over 8 million people fall victim to each year (source ) A member of this forum touched the "wrong type of validator" () at Paddington, he thought he was touching out of the H&C line but the validator counted him as touching into National Rail, and he fell victim to the scam. It can happen to anyone. Fortunately he was able to get his money back after faffing about with a 'phone call.

Most fares for journeys commencing after 0930 are set to rise after the introduction of Oyster on National Rail, so it's not all good news (unless you're TfL's bank manager!)

That's ridiculous, as at peak time there are trains on the supposedly Moorgate-only line! Not to mention weekends... TfL must assume people only travel between 0930 and 1600 Mondays-Fridays. They've made a map look more complicated, and for absolutely no gain whatsoever - all it does is make unsuspecting passengers think there are no direct trains from KGX to places like Hertford, when in fact there's a chance there will be. Numpties!

Thank you. I worked for a commuter rail and had been told that it was already in use on the commuter rails but I could never find anything on it. Will the commuters accept this easily or will it take a lot of education?

Hi there

Downunder in Victoria we are about to get MYKI, an Oyster card type ticketing system, except it will cover the whole state of Victoria (plus some interstate locations served by V\Line coaches) which is about the same size as the UK.

MIKI will use 71 zones

The MYKI ticketing manual, which will ensure a good night's sleep after reading it, if your eyes haven't glazed over in the meantime.

The diehard ticket enthustasts can download it from here :
http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/assets/PDFs/2009-Fares-and-Ticketing-Manual/MYKI-Ticketing-manual.pdf

It's about 8MB if you have a slow connection.

Cheers & happy reading

When I was in Brisbane, I saw their use of Oyster (different name, obviously) and it was quite amusing to get the 'Seek assistance' message on the CTS gates. I did feel like going up and enquiring why my Z1-6 Travelcard didn't work. "Oh, this station isn't within the zones??".

Hi there

You can't buy a MYKI with a UK address, I can even get one with a Melbourne address as it hasn't been rolled out yet.

Probably be rolled out in the week between Xmas & new year, whilst the Public Transport minister is holiday on some south pacific island.

Cheers

Hi there

The public transport minister, Lynne Cosky MP is in charge of the MYKI project, which is running overdue and at about $1.3 billion also over budget.

Normally government ministers will turn up to the opening of an envelope, if there was a chance of a picture in the paper.

For MYKI, Ms Kosky is doing a runner, as she has botched the whole project as well as most other things to do with Public Transport in Victoria.

Apparently the only reason she's still in the portfolio, is that no one else wants the job.

She didn't want it either, but was sort of demoted from, I think the education portfolio a few years back.

A 234 page thread on MYKI is on Railpage Australia http://www.railpage.com.au/f-t11325852.htm

Cheers
