Given how often and readily both locomotives and trains seem to be repainted, does anyone know how much it costs to repaint a loco/single vehicle? Seems to be a remarkably quick, easy and therefore presumably cheap process?....

Not always paint any longer. Many emu vehicles are delivered in plain grey and have large adhesive vinyls attached for the livery. This is particularly favoured for liveries with multiple colours, where waiting for one colour of paint to dry before starting the next one is a significant part of the plan, as well as tying up the paint shop for extended periods (as Network SouthEast found out).

PTSO or platform depending on the weather
Depends on the type/quantity of paint, the specific shade to be mixed and how many colours being applied as top coat. I would expect "bodging" underframes black/brown etc would be cheap as the average Jo Public doesn't pay attention to the lower parts of the engine/carriage. A uniform colour would obviously be cheaper than multi-colours

But in costs of time, there is obviously the time out of traffic in the paint shop and the time taken for each coat to dry.

it isnt cheap at all and costs for patch painting are even worse. Hence why there are so many vinyl wraps on a plain base colour
