Can anyone advise me of the different types of pantographs in use on modern National Rail rolling stock, and if possible point me towards images which will help me recognise the different types?

Also if anyone knows what type of pantograph is fitted to the Overhead Line Test Coach (977993)in the New Measurement Train, I would be obliged

Those in use will be Stone Faiveley (not fitted to new stock since the 319/0 entered service afaik) and Brecknell Willis.

It looks like a Brecknell Willis to me, tbh I'd be surprised if it was anything else.

There are a few versions of the B-W highspeed pan - the obvious difference is one has a somewhat truncated Z shaped arm, and the other ( there are two versions of the other one iirc, one is for EMUs with less roof space I think ) has a simpler two-piece arm.

Finding decent detail photos is not terribly fun...

The high speed has the additional apex with the aerofoils, this is for use over 110mph.

The unit version doesn't have the additional apex, uses dampers for horizontal damping and has aerofoils on the elbow.

Not great but try this one:

or that one:

(it is in the lowered position here, obviously!)

This page is quite comprehensive, from AEI to Stone Faiveley (still in use on many BR EMUs) to the Brecknell Willis/BR high speed pantograph on use on most current EMUs.

Intresting site, and an early IEP prototype :)

Well not really as the panto wasn't supplying traction power ;) Though that will have been a fun formation to drive, lots of power on tap with two HST power cars basically back to back <D

Intresting site

Yeah it's one of the more interesting out there. The first time I found it I lost about an hour just looking at all the pictures let alone reading the information there. There are some cool stories as well, this being a personal favourite.

It also quite a sad website in many ways as it demonstrates perfectly one of the real losses of privatisation, namely the loss of the Research and Development wing of BR. For all it's faults other faults, BR's research boffins were often at the cutting edge with their work. A sadly missed capability.

Wasn't the Brecknell Willis pantograph something that came about as part of the APT (Advanced Passenger Train) development?
