Hello!
Some vocabulary:
- Passe Navigo: the name of the RFID smartcards issued by IDF Mobilités (very roughly, the Parisian equivalent of TfL)
- Passe Navigo Découverte: a type of Navigo card that can be purchased by any person, irrespective of residency, for a cost of €5. A passport-sized picture is necessary. The Navigo Découverte card may then be loaded with daily, weekly, or monthly passes.
After having purchased and personalised a
Passe Navigo Découverte from a RATP or SNCF ticket office, your relative may buy the following:
- Daily pass: €7.5. Covers Paris and all of Île-de-France région. Valid on the Métro, bus, tram, RER, and rail services (*). Not valid for travel to CDG airport by RER B services.
- Weekly pass: €22.80. Covers Paris and all of Île-de-France région. Valid on the Métro, bus, tram, RER, and rail services (*).
These passes can be bought from any RATP or SNCF ticket office or vending machine.
But - and this is a huge but - the weekly pass is from Monday to Sunday only. As for the daily pass, it is valid from beginning of service on day D to end of service during the night between D and D+1. Unfortunately, we do not have 24-hour or 7-day passes which would make life much easier for visitors and residents alike. Similarly, we do not have a daily cap system like there is in London - indeed, Navigo passes cannot store individual journeys at the moment. Our ticketing system is way behind London's unfortunately - although the fares are noticeably lower!
(*)Anecdotically, not valid on Orlyval / Le Bus Direct services and on TGV services between CDG Airport, Marne-la-Vallée, and Massy-Palaiseau
