Hi all,
I was just wondering if anybody knows of the current pay and holiday entitlement, benefits of a driver for gn.

Many thanks.

PS. Is a pay rise still on the cards. 25%?

Pay at the moment is around 52, 4 weeks rostered leave , 8 floating days.

Trainee holiday is about 24 days I believe although you don't really get a chance to take it in the first 6 months, pay is about 26k. 52k qualified, next few years takes pay to 63k plus around £500 for each Sunday worked and you will do a minimum of 12 Sundays.

Is pay every four weeks, so 13 times a year? And do you get the same every pay day or does it vary depending on hours worked? Just curious to understand how it works, cheers.

Every four weeks yes.

You'll get the same BASIC pay every pay day, but any overtime you've worked will be on top, which will lead to a different amount actually paid.

If you budget on your basic, which you'll always get, then anything extra will be a bonus.



Your roster will be an average of 35 hours per week, sometimes more sometimes less, but you will be paid 35 hours for each week unless you do overtime on a particular day above your hours in the roster.

New starters (joining after 12th June 2017 I think the date is) have to commit to working 12 Sundays in the roster per year. You'll choose 3 per quarter. So you'll have some control over the Sundays you'll be working.

The other Sundays in the roster, you'll still be able to say you aren't available with seven days notice.

This isn't as good as it used to be (where you could say unavailable to any or all Sundays), but not as bad as at other companies where drivers are committed to all the Sundays in the roster.


Existing Drivers it's 8 Sundays a year (2 per quarter).

Is that 'new starters' meaning fully qualified new starters or trainees too? I am worried that as a trainee, they'll put me on the 12-sunday contract once passed out as my current contract is 'trainee train driver'.

My understanding, is anyone joining the Driving grade (becoming a Trainee Driver) after 12th June 2017. So if you became a Trainee Driver before that date then you will only have 8 to commit to per year. Ask a Union Rep to make sure.

From October 2019 the basic pay will be £63,196. If you worked 12 Sundays on this rate of pay (Sundays now pay time plus 55%), then the average pay you'd earn on top would be in the region of £5,638. This is twelve average Sundays so the payment you'd actually earn would depend on the length of each of the turns of duty you'd done on the Sundays you'd worked. You could work more than 12 Sundays so this is just to give an idea.

Your overtime/Sundays will be paid every four weeks with your basic salary.

24 days leave. Of which:

Weekly leave:
1 week (4 days) in early winter (Jan - early Mar)
1 week Spring (late Mar - early May)
2 weeks Summer (early May - Early October)
1 week Late winter (late October - December)

That's 20 days as weekly leave - HOWEVER you can 'float' one week (not either of the two summer weeks which must be taken together) to give you 4 ad-hoc days.


Ad-hoc days:

A lot of people float a week (quite often the early winter one) so they have 4 weekly leave weeks (2 of which are together in the summer) and 8 ad-hoc days (the 4 they are entitled to plus the 4 they've floated from weekly leave).


On top of that, there are 8 bank holidays where you'll either be:

Booked off with pay (effectively having a 'bank holiday' like normal people)
Rest Day (in which case you'll earn an additional 'ad-hoc' days leave)
Be rostered to work (in which case you'll earn an additional 'ad-hoc' days leave and also earn an additional 15% pay for time worked)


Weekly leave, you are all put into groups and each group at the depot rotates around each year so you all get Christmas week off for example, every so many years. You can swap a weeks leave with another Driver, or request to swap into any vacant week.

Does anyone know the meaning of 'clean salary' as used in the company information on ASLEF site?

Clean salary means everything is included in the basic salary (and is pensionable), rather than having a lower salary and various non-pensionable enhancements / allowances on top.

The only enhancements now are if overtime is worked.

In British Rail days there were:

Irregular and Unsocial hours Payment
Variable Roster Payment
Both if these worked on a percentage basis I think.

Driver Only Operation payment
Paid per shift if it involved driving a DOO train (even if it was just empty from the sidings)

I think it was time and a quarter after 21:00 and before 06:00 with maybe another enhancement in the dead of night.
Time and a quarter on Saturdays with further enhancement before 06:00 and after 21:00.

There was also, and many companies still have this but Great Northern and Thameslink don't for Drivers anymore, a 'London Allowance'. This is often pensionable where it is paid.


All of those were done away with and incorporated into basic salary (which is why there was such a big jump in basic pay shortly after privatisation). This of course skews the figures when politicians, journalists and government report writers tell everyone about how Drivers were only on £11,000 before privatisation, but neglect to say that typical earnings were about twice that!

Really good info, so overtime is also pensionable, even though it's extra? And also, who else in your family gets the free travel? Much appreciated in advance for all your input guys.

No overtime isn't pensionable. None of the enhancements were/are except in some instances (not GN as they don't have it for Drivers) 'London Allowance'.

You'll get travel facilities for a Wife/Husband/Partner you are in a meaningful relationship with and live with,
Plus dependants - children or step-children.

Yes. Free travel on Great Northern, Thameslink, Southern, and Gatwick Express.

At the moment, as long as they remain Govia franchises (so only until December for the first one!) free travel on London Midland and South Eastern.

Hi there if your a driver you may see me I'm a dispatcher so good luck you'll love the role,as drive s tell me it's a nice compmay to work for, as is any company where your a driver. mainline salary for a suburban role but you'll have nights. Benefits you receive a staff travel pass available on all services what Whoosh said. Including SE and LM but from December they'll issue new ones minus LM. So there goes my free travel from Hemel.

Are you paid in arrears? So what you worked in the first 4 weeks, you get paid at the end of the following 4 weeks?

One week in arrears. So this Friday 18th August 2017 is payday for the four week period Sunday 16th July to Saturday 12th August 2018. If you'd only done a week within those dates you'd only get one week's money.
