Whereas I agree with this policy, there is an issue where the destination on the actual train is usually the real one, so doesn't tie up with what is on the destination boards (the pacers in York heading to Burley Park would still display Leeds or perhaps Harrogate)
As well as avoiding passengers catching the 'all shacks' I think there is or was a similar thing going on since Northern started joining two services together at Manchester for operational reasons with either the train or the boards ignoring this.
I was waiting in Preston to catch a train to Chorley and the train was either displaying Manchester but advertised as Huddersfield, or displaying Huddersfield but advertised as Manchester. It caused confusion.
