Northern do incredibly well al things considered, on my side Picc et al we have cleaners based at the station during the day who strive to keep up with the amount of Metros and trash left by are great passengers who do not know how to use a bin (at 2300 I can understand it but at 07.45???) and the trains have been quite a lot cleaner especially the last 6 or so months, they are not perfect by no means but no worse or better than other suburban operators.

Actually Train Presentation at 85% is pretty poor for such a system, but it could mean either that the standard of cleaning is not great, or that the targets are tough. These are all individual so you cant compare one TOCs numbers with another.

I know at FCC recently they raised their own standards which has made the scores go down. IOW these are pretty meaningless.

from a email northern sent me mainly about toilet presentation/cleaning:

Northern said:
All training cleaning activities are now being brought under Northern management. The process is well advanced and all contracted out cleaning will come in-house on the West district. All agency staff will transfer to Northern. The aim of this is to have a far greater control of the standards that we clean to.
During the process heavy cleaning locations are being refocused. There will be four main sites with dedicated staff and equipment that will be given the time to do the job properly. The sites involved will be the three main depots and Hull. The aim is to be able to meet the cycle time of 56 days between heavy-duty cleans. *
Separate from this there is a specific team looking at toilets and how we both maintain them and keep them fresh during the day. Currently different products are being tested and identified plus a common policy on what to do with a problem toilet in service. *A new system of checks on toilets has been implemented. Again this is aimed at raising standards but is only at the start of day at moment.
Staff awareness is also being targeted to put them in the shoes of the travelling public. This has been a theme of the latest Engineering Road shows conducted by local senior management. All locations are visited and get the same message.
Presently all toilets are getting painted up (and some on repaints too). Currently 150/2 units are being gutted. *Mini make over's are being done on 158 units that were transferred in to franchise, West based 142 are also being targeted. *We are working hard to lift the standards, this however is a slow process.
