Tomorrow I intend to make a journey from a station where the only ticketing facility is a Permit to travel machine, to Waterloo East, and leave by the exit to Southwark station. I cannot afford any delays. Are there any facilities to pay the extra fare at that exit? Should I make sure I pay the full amount in the PERTIS machine? (I only require a single.)

Last time i travelled to Waterloo East, there were manual barriers at the top of the ramps, does the train you are travelling on to London have a guard?

If so i would approach him at the first opportunity with say a 10p permit to travel ticket.

If not then i would put as much of your fare in as possible, and seek assistance when you get to Waterloo East.

Not sure about the Southwark entrances, but Waterloo East should be fully gated now as the Waterloo station entrance has been renovated.

Yes, it has a particularly bizarre setup on the Southwark side with TOC gates, a sort of 'no man's land' with no public entrance/exit but an LUL ticket office, and then LUL gates. It's a bit like a Berlin border crossing before the wall came down:grin:

Somewhere between WY372 and MV7
The no mans land has a SE TVM and a LUL POM (POM is LUL speak for TVM, for the uninitiated) and gateline assistants from both companies, but the SE one doesn't look like an RPI. Therefore, based on my experience with similar situations at other stations (not SE operated however), you may be sent to another exit to speak to an RPI to issue your ticket if there is one somewhere else on the station... Is there no way you can take the tube from Waterloo instead and pass through that gateline? It may reduce your chance of delays.

That's probably the best suggestion.

Yes. I went to pay at Waterloo East gateline and the guy was astonished that I'd bothered as I have a 1-3 Travelcard.
