Hi all,

I have a question about how the permitted route system works in the Hove-Brighton-Lewes area.

If I was to buy a season ticket from Haywards Heath to Brighton, I understand that it would be a permitted route to make the journey via either Hove or Lewes, as well as direct. But would this also allow me to alight at Hove and Lewes?

I ask because I live in Haywards Heath, work in Hove, and need to travel to Lewes after work twice a week (before returning to Haywards Heath). It seems to me as if I would be able to make all these journeys using one Haywards Heath - Brighton season ticket, i.e HH to Hove, Hove to Lewes via Brighton, then Lewes to HH. Is this correct or am I misinterpreting things?

I haven't been able to find a conclusive answer to this online.

Thanks in advance
Steve

I agree that Haywards Heath-Preston Park-Hove-Brighton appears to be a permitted route for a Haywards Heath to Brighton ticket (in addition to the route going directly from Preston Park to Brighton). And because a season ticket is good for multiple journeys over any part of any permitted route, I agree that your proposed season ticket is good for Haywards Heath-Brighton, Haywards Heath-Hove and Hove-Brighton.

However, none of the journey planners show the ticket as valid via Lewes.

However, a Haywards Heath to London Road (Brighton) season ticket would appear to do what you want (i.e. allow validity via Brighton, via Hove & Brighton or via Lewes). [EDIT: but if using this ticket to travel between Brighton and Lewes, it is arguable that you would be limited to those trains that stop at London Road, although this is something on which there is probably not a consensus on the Forum.]

A Haywards Heath - Lewes ticket will let you do what you proposed: direct, via Brighton, and/or via Hove.

Heading towards Brighton from origins on the Brighton Main Line the via-Lewes route only become available when starting from Three Bridges or further north. BB21's suggestion is a good one for the same price as Haywards Heath - Brighton.
