first time in Perth as a passenger, must have been a very busy station in its heyday.

neglected now, lovely stonework full of holes and plugs from previous fixings, metal bridges could do with paint, covers left hanging of an access panel to some heavy (power?) cables.

Seems to be having a lot of outside work being done at the moment.

I believe the entire station is being repainted in SR's royal blue and white scheme. It's a beautiful station though, hauntingly quiet.

If you can get your hands on a copy of Trains Illustrated: February 1957, there's a very good 'Resort for Railfans' article outlining it's history and status at '57...it did indeed have a pretty serious status around '59-'63 when I spotted there, and especially in pre-nationalisation days: train splitting/adding removing restaurant cars and pilots etc.
Anyway PM your address and I'll send you a photocopy if you wish. Alternatively the Vintage Carriage Trust at Ingrow on the KWVR will have a copy for about £4.

VCT on 01535 680425...well worth a visit of course.

It's a fantastic station.

The Aberdeen platforms aren't really anything special, but when you walk through to the Inverness ones, it's like a completely different place. A brilliant sense of grandeur, and a great touch is the old Motorail ramp still in place on platform 5.

It is a busy station passenger use up to almost 1M pa. Doubled in the last 10 years.

No wonder the "express" services arriving from Perth are full before they reach Stirling.

Hopefully a 1 Million passenger station will warrant electification from Green hill to Perth.

I don't think that would be much use unless it was extended to Dundee to meet up with a potential Edinburgh-Aberdeen electrification, because AFAIK there's nothing to Glasgow starting at Perth, and all the expresses are from Aberdeen (the infrequent INV-GLQ services stop at Gleneagles and Dunblane).

Of course, electrification could bring with it new services...

Indeed, although there are a few services that start at Perth...

05:16 to Glasgow Queen Street
06:39 to Newcraighall (via Stirling)
07:03 to Glasgow Queen Street

And a few that terminate at Perth

21:33 from Edinburgh
22:48 from Glasgow Queen Street
23:36 from Glasgow Queen Street

The sleeper could potentially be loco hauled from Perth.

And who wouldn't love to see a 225 or Pendolino at Perth station?

According to a guard I asked about a month ago, there's a new footbridge being installed with lifts, as Transport Scotland have decided the ramps on the current bridges are too steep for disabled passengers.

The bridge on the Aberdeen line platforms is to be closed off, with passengers using a new bridge between platforms 1 and 2. The eventual plan is to close off platforms 3 and 4, making them into bays. This then removes the need for converting the disused parcels lifts between 3 and 4/5/6/7 into something suitable for passenger usage. I find all this hard to believe as it would probably mean closing or heavily remodelling the carriage sidings, but the guard was adamant about it!

If 3 and 4 are converted to bays, that would leave 7 as the only through platform on the Inverness lines, which I'm not sure is enough.

The single lines on the HML already make things tight without un-doubling at a station of all places!

Like I said, I find it hard to believe! The Inverness line's problem is large sections of single track, so I suppose only one platform at Perth, whilst a bit limiting, isn't too much of an issue. My main concern was where all those trains are going to be stabled at night if the carriage sidings can no longer be accessed!

I have never noticed this. Next time I am up I will have a look.

I sometimes wish motorail still existed, motorways or not, as I hate the hours and hours of boring driving and just to throw my car on train would be bliss. I guess though I would be in a minority of one as it so fairly easy to simply hire a car at one's destination (well it is in Inverness:))
