Unfortunately I didn't manage to get tickets :(
So instead, I'll be following the train by car, taking pictures :)
However, I'm unfamiliar with most of the areas it goes through, so would appreciate some advice as to good photographic locations. Anything from "big landscape" shots to the stereotypical "front and side" shot. The main requirement is that the suggested locations are easy to get to by car. I'm happy to go to stations as well (but only if there's free parking!).
Clearly it'll be quite difficult to plan which locations I'll go to until the detailed timings of the train are released, but that's less of an issue than finding locations in the first place.

I'll definitely be following days 3 and 4 (Scotland) and possibly day 1 (East Anglia), but not day 2 (LSWR land).
On day 3, I'd like something like the following (whether this is logistically possible, I'll work out once detailed times are published):
  • A view approaching Mossend Yard
  • Loco change in Mossend Yard
  • Somewhere where the railway runs along the Clyde west of Glasgow
  • Between Helensburgh and Crianlarich then Crianlarich and Oban
  • At Oban
  • Two different locations back to Helensburgh
  • Between Glasgow and Edinburgh
  • Somewhere where the ECML runs along the coast in Northumberland
  • Somewhere between Newcastle and Carlisle, if it'll still be light
On day 4:
  • At least one location on the WCML south of Carlisle, and again south of Warrington
  • Somewhere in the West Midlands
If I do day 1:
  • On the mainline south of Manningtree
  • On the Harwich branch
  • Somewhere between Ipswich and Cambridge
  • Somewhere south of Cambridge
Depending on timings, it may also be possible to get into the London suburbs on day 1, day 2 if it's really early, and day 4.

Many thanks for all your suggestions! :)

Unlucky on not managing to get a ticket, there have been various ones briefly popping back on sale recently. I can't help with locations but please do share your photos afterwards! :)

A possible option, depending on what kind of photo you want and if you have a good zoom, would be to stand down by the Tweed in Berwick and photograph it crossing the Royal Border Bridge?

There is a footpath that largely follows the ECML along the coast between Tweedmouth and Scremerston level crossing. I'm not sure what this is like for photographs but given it's location I'd have thought it would be decent. Others may be able to help more than me with that one.

Unfortunately it'll be dark by that point. It'll get dark about 20:00. Apart from at stations, your options for photographs on that section of the route will be very limited at that time of day.

Please do share your photographs afterwards! I'll be onboard my own photo opportunities will be rather limited!

I'd prefer something along the coast, the kind of shot where you can get the train, cliffs and sea all in

Thanks, I'll look at that.

I thought that might be the case, unfortunately
