Also, Germans still have an innate aversion to uniformed people demanding compliance.

Scotsman, you may be thinking all the way back to the 1940s, but in Cold War East Germany, the actions of the Ministry for State Security, which spied on large swathes of its own citizens, has led to an aversion to CCTV monitoring systems to this day.

The Stasi existed long before CCTV was widespread. In fact hardly saw any fixed stuff away from the wall. Plenty of hand held stuff was around though.

Instead, they Relied on the old tried and tested methods - informers and intimidation.

We do it every now and then on GWR mostly for targeted op's though rather than routine

Was on the tube one morning a couple of years back and a guy who jut looked like a tourist with a baseball hat and rucksack, jeans and t shirt, came and sat opposite me flashed an id card and asked to see my ticket or pass.

I showed him, he thanked me got up and walked off.

First and only time I have encountered one in many years of using the underground.

You misinterpret me. A dislike and rejection of old Stasi methods means that many in Germany dislike newer (e.g. CCTV) methods, whoever may be in control.

Last time I saw a RPI was a few months ago on the Underground between Waterloo and Victoria when I was stopped after having no ticket - I'd had my nicked from my pocket whilst coming out from the Drain... I explained the situation and that I'd spoken to the people at Waterloo who had cleared it for me to travel to Victoria. They came with me up to the Victoria gateline in case there was an issue.

Previous to that, I was passing through High Street Kensington when a group of people boarded and i remarked to the guy sat accross from me "Ah, thats the ticket inspectors" and when asked how I knew, I said "That big woman was on that documentary last night" - cue his exit at the next station
