Last couple of weeks, the traditional 'Newbury platform 1, Basingstoke platform 2' has been reversed and barring problems now seems to be fixed that way.

Idle curiosity, is there a reason? It feels like it was the old way forever really, and whilst I can't see it makes a huge difference, just wondered

Doesn’t seem to be any particular reason that I can see but they are now booked in reverse

Something related to the Class 387 ASDO system but I can’t recall the exact details. There is a benefit of it being the new way around, to my understanding.

When both services were diesel operated I used to wonder why it wasn’t operated as a through Basingstoke-Newbury via Reading service.

Obviously that wouldn’t work now with Newbury being electic…

Oddly, last week I was traveling from Newbury to Reading and we terminated in P3 which is normally used by XC Voyagers.

Risk of spreading disruption for little gain, I should have thought.

Especially as the Basingstoke trains are 2tph but the Newbury stopper is 1tph so would be a misbalance

And you could just get off at Reading West for some fresh air and get back on. I can't see that it's a big direct flow.

I do think more higher frequency services out of Reading are super useful for encouraging local commuting (vs car) and also feeding longer consist services to London. For example, and especially with Green Park, Basingstoke would be good to get to 3tph, and Newbury slows to 2tph. I also think there is more potential for the longer distance Salisbury/SWT services out of Reading - again to help boost where Waterloo paths don't exist and add new options into Reading job opportunities/connections.
