Hi

I'm on my first term of a full time MBA at Cranfield University near Bedford. One of my assignments is in marketing and I'm looking at whether Premier Inn would be viable in France (they're now in Middle East and India and have 1 hotel in Germany too).

If you travel regularly to France on business or for leisure would you consider them?

Please can you complete the short survey here:

Thanks

Interesting idea I must say. Having used a few hotels in similar price range to premier inn back home, I've come to the conclusion that you generally get less for your money - at least when taking about comparable chains - in France than in the Uk. Considering what you may pay 70 euros for in France, the French tourists over here (if
Such a thing exists!) must be well impressed with a £29 premier inn room.

Yes - I would consider subject to price and location. But I do wonder to what extent the accor hotels group has saturated the equivalent market. I did a search for Angers from them and it returned 8 accor hotels - 3 mercure, 3 ibis (at three different standards) and 2 F1

AdamW - hmmm the £29 rooms are hard to find - especially in the major tourist destinations. While the beds are much nicer, I've tended to find chain accommodation in France cheaper in general.

I would use them unless they used misleading geographical location descriptions such as your 'near Bedford' description of Cranfield e.g. Reims near Paris. :)

Also the options on your survey are limited. I would generally stay in a Gite/self catering if on leisure travel and whatever accommodation was paid for by my employer when on business travel.

I would stay for maybe a week or 2 if on leisure travel but only as long as necessary if on business travel, which would depend on the reason for the visit so there is no such thing as a typical visit.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I get your point on the French market. Over the next few years very few European countries are expected see growth in hotels - UK and Germany the strongest (but Premier Inn has beaten me to Germany) so I've gone with France, especially given the proximity to the UK and it being a major market for British travellers.

I also agree with the market being saturated with Accor. I see a major opportunity here though, they have so many brands and some really poor products - F1, Ibis Styles, etc. which are opportunities for PI to exploit.

I'm not suggesting PI take 10% of the market, that would be a major investment and risk, more could they move into the market say on the corridor between Calais and Paris and within the Paris conurbation.

F1 has always been amazing value - people know you aren't getting much more than a bedroom to sleep in. Premier Inn only has one brand - I agree, that if they were to expand, then the would be a good area to start.

How much have you looked into PI pricing i.e. are you really comparing like-for-like? As with Travelodge, the cheapest deals aren't necessarily available.

e.g. PI, 20 Jan for 3 nights - 2 adults and 2 kids. Price point is around £100 (Dover)

For Accor, the prices range from £75 - 200ish depending on the brand. (Calais)

Given the nature of French labour laws, you may also need to consider whether PI UK prices can convert at the exchange rate.

The management who run Premier Inn will have a jolly good reason why they have entered Germany, Middle East & India, leaving France.

You need to try to understand why they haven't entered the French market and whether this block is big enough to prevent entering the market.

I think they're developing a second brand. They've opened a new 'hub' hotel in London, whatever one of those is.

To answer the original question, I would stay there on business, but unlikely to do so for leisure for anything over 2 nights (even though I get up to 50% off). I'm interested to know what food offering they would provide.

Costa has just started moving into France on a large scale now.

It appears, from a quick Google, to be going head to head with Ibis Styles - so clearly they think that has potential as well. Seems to be wifi-inclusive (chargeable breakfast though I think unlike Ibis Styles - but then my one criticism of Ibis Styles is that the Continental-only breakfast is very basic, and I would genuinely rather pay extra for a better one, or not pay if not having it at all), smaller rooms and stylish modern decor.

They are opening hub hotels - but my understanding is that they are for city centres where space is at a premium. So really only valid for Paris and a few other major cities in France, otherwise France has much more space.
