Hi all,
I am currently a police officer who is due to start driver training with Northern Rail.

Obviously, as a police officer, we paid into various groups and associations, such as the Federation, Sports & Social, etc, which gave us certain benefits.

What, if any, groups or addictions are there available to train drivers, and what are the associated costs and benefits to us?

Thanks in advance.

ASLEF is the main/obvious union one. There are others but I think these maybe be a more TOC by TOC basis (or depot by depot).

Best thing is to wait until you get in to the job and see which ones take your fancy.

Transport Benevolent Fund, £1 per week - you'll have a rep visit during training.

Healthshield healthcare plan - leaflets around the Training Academy and you'll probably meet the reps at some point as well, either at the academy or at your depot.

There's a credit union too, but that might vary by depot.

BRASS2

(British Rail Additional Superannuation Scheme version 2)

Which is an Additional Voluntary Contribution to make on top of your normal contribution into the Railway Pension Scheme.

The Union which deals with your grade.

They are the most common, there are also donations to charity out of your gross pay that some companies offer. This is a much more tax efficient way of doing things than a direct debit, meaning either you or the charity get more.

Maccalad,

I'm also starting on 30th Jan with Norther, and I just wondered if you'd received anything through the post yet?

I received the same for my start date on the 13th Feb, sent it all back first class recorded on Saturday which has still not been received so assuming Royal Mail have lost it all. Fabulous start! Spoke to HR who are going to send me another pack out.

Is there anything which you can pay into which is like a group insurance scheme which offers travel cover, breakdown cover, home emergency cover, etc?

Good luck to those that started their training today, in particular to the guys & gals to be based at Blackburn! Hope you all had a fab first day. See you there in 2 weeks!
