Portsmouth Direct Line weekend works

Good evening,

Sat on yet another RRB south of Guildford. A lot of weekend work and more to come…I wondered if anyone could advise on when this level of work/disruption will end?

For whatever reason, and the roads are the same, the trend is to take more and more, longer and more geographically extensive possessions.

This trend started after Hatfield and despite many promises from on high to change the operating processes to make the work less disruptive, the amount disruption and use of road transport has just increased and increased almost in a straight line, and should be expected to continue do so for the foreseeable.

When they close Farncombe, Haslemere and Petersfield Signal Boxes, or shortly afterwards. I am not sure of the date, but I think it is next month.

That wouldn’t surprise me. However, it was originally due in 2023, but may have slipped further. There is information saying that it will be completed in 2025, but this may only apply to the level-crossings.

I see in Network Rail’s Compedium of Signal Box Opening Times that all three boxes on the Portsmouth Direct are due to be abolished as part of the Farncombe to Petersfield Resignalling Project, which is due to be completed in November this year. We shall see…
