I've got a flight from Manchester Airport at 12:10 on June 24th.

Unfortunately, one of my favourite bands has announced a one-off gig on the evening of the 23rd at the Wedgewood Rooms, Southsea/Portsmouth.

Getting down there wouldn't be a problem, but I'm not sure that it'd be possible to get back up to Manchester in time for the flight out on the 24th.

I've had a quick look at Megabus from Portsmouth but there's nothing overnight, and I can't seem to get an entirely rail-only itinerary overnight with Advances to get me back in time with sufficient leeway, but I may have overlooked something.

Does anybody have any ideas please? It's not the end of the world if I can't make the show, but it would be nice. It would probably be finishing between 22:00 and 22:30.

Cheers

There is the following from Fratton, which is about a fifteen minute walk from the Wedgwood Rooms:

2P12 0452 Fratton to London Waterloo arriving at 0640
Tube to Euston on the Northern Line
1H62 0735 London Euston to Crewe arriving at 0910
2A84 0934 Crewe to Manchester Airport arriving at 1004.

Where are you flying to? What time do you need to arrive at the airport/check in?

National Express coach from Portsmouth 0145 - Southampton 0230, wait an hour, then another NX coach Southampton 0330 - London Victoria Coach Stn 0520.

Then up to Euston, first VT to Manchester is 0636 - change at Crewe gets you to MAN airport at 0904.

The NX coach to London would provide a hopefully (or not?) none-too-filthy cradle of sorts for a little kip.

I doubt this will be cheap-but could you not stay overnight in Portsmouth or Southampton and fly to Manchester?

You are strongly advised not to rely on 2P12 for that connection. You have been warned.

BE861 (arriving MAN 0745) is currently just under £30. Very good suggestion indeed. You won't be able to do rail for cheaper.

Either one of these should put you on the 06:36 from Euston (Airport at 09:04):

22:48 Fratton-Brighton 00:26
03:50 Brighton-Victoria 05:56

Or

23:28 Fratton-Guildford 00:37
04:25 Guildford-Waterloo 05:18

If you don't mind a short night's sleep, you could try overnighting at Winchester or Guildford, the destinations of the last two SWT services out of Portsmouth, and picking up an early train to London, or even the first Southampton-Manchester XC. No idea about Travelodges , nor have I looked at fares

I assume that the 2332 from Fratton to Eastleigh (2T68) should be reliable, being the last train of the night heading that way?

Unfortunately the Travelodge right next to Eastleigh station seems to be booked out for the night of the 23rd June, ditto the Premier Inn down the road at Southampton Airport, at least according to Hotels.com .

Edit - the Holiday Inn at Eastleigh shows as having availability. Under a mile from the station. Not a budget price though.

Thanks everyone - it completely slipped my mind to look for flights/trains from Southampton!

It's very tempting to book the £29.99 flight, or the 0509 XC to Manchester (Trainsplit was able to knock ~20% off the through price) but finding somewhere to stay (ie B&B/hostel) that doesn't cost more than the journey itself is proving difficult!

It's Ryanair to Berlin, so 2 hours early arrival at the airport as a minimum - I had a quick nosy and found that XC will (in theory, according to their website) assist with onward travel in the event of a rail delay providing 2 hours are allowed.

I'm meeting friends at the airport and 6 of us are flying together; if it weren't for that I'd look at changing the flight/buying a new one direct to Berlin.

Travelodge website shows availability at both Eastleigh hotels.

Why so? Fifty minutes to get from Waterloo to Euston is ample time. Also that itenary is suggested on NRE journey planners!

So the 1004 would be pushing it a tad so perhaps the 0636 from Euston is an option, or as you say the 0509 to Manchester.

Haven't looked at your profile or age but are you a student with an NUS card? Don't forget XC offer NUS discount on top of 16-25 Railcard tickets on Advance tickets.

And therein lies a lesson - never trust an aggregator site to show a true picture of hotel availability, as they may only have access to some of the inventory.

£60 for a room at the Eastleigh Central Travelodge right next to the station. Logistically it would work well.

In what way will they assist? Can you please provide the link? Thanks :)

You clearly do not know about 2P12.

Do not rely on it.

The OP cannot afford to be late.

You could always go with something like this https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/1543...&children=0&infants=0&s=NnyDGUuu#neighborhood.
You could then get a train from Southampton Central to Southampton Airport Parkway and fly as others have suggested, or if you fancy seeing some more of residential Southampton there is always the U1 unilink bus to the airport.

If you have a flight to catch from an airport near to a station served by CrossCountry trains, we will normally only consider providing alternative transport if you planned your rail journey to arrive at the airport station at least two hours before your scheduled check in time.

I'm not sure what exactly 'alternative transport' would refer to, nor whether that applies to the airport or from it. I think it used to be worded differently.

I'm sure that only refers to transport to the airport, in other words a taxi paid for by XC if their trains are up the creek. XC are not going to help you get to Faro or the Faroes.
