Haven't heard much about these recently. Rural areas seem to be being served by demand-response telephone services.

Are there any areas where there is still a good postbus network?

I used a Postbus from Alston to Brampton years ago. It was just a red estate car and I had been the first passenger for over a week!

Malham has buses every day of the week.

In Winter the Saturday service is the best of the week -

4 buses on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday
3 buses on a Sunday
2 buses on a Tuesday and Thursday

All to/from Skipton

In Summer there are 5 buses on a Sunday to Settle, 4 to Skipton

And 5 on a Saturday to Settle

And a Wednesday service from Bradford.

No, there aren't, are there? I always thought that places like Devon, Wales and Norfolk would have them.

There did used to be a good few postbus routes in wales but they have been withdrawn over the years.

There used to be at least one from Llandovery which did a circular route with end to end journey of 4 hours or something

I recall me and the missus catching one from Devil's Bridge back to Aberystwyth a few years back (who wants to travel on a steam train when you can sample the delights of a Sherpa minibus journey). It appears that one no longer has that option.

Errr, Smethwick!
There appears to be conflicting information around about any remaining routes in England.

The Leicestershire route may have been withdrawn as far back as last October ( http://www.inloughborough.com/news/100402/Change to Harborough Post bus ) while Buses magazine for April reports that the very last English route, from Malton, is to disappear shortly (so the other North Yorkshire route still on the Royal Mail website must also have gone at some point).

Hope not, I fancy having a trip on the Malton one!

'Fraid you'll have to hurry - county council website ( http://www.northyorkstravel.info/search-results/?s=Malton ) confirms Malton Postbus service "ends April 29". (That page also appears to have a conventional tendered replacement, new service 190 from April 30, but I know that won't be quite the same thing).

This council's comprehensive links to bus timetables doesn't now show anything for the other N Yorks route around Hawes either, so I'm thinking the Royal Mail's own website is definitely a bit dodgy, accuracy-wise.
