HR have contacted me about going to Southampton for assessment tests, as a Metro Guard. I assume these will be quite different from those I originally done for station staff. I believe they will be the ones listed in the title. Can anyone suggest websites to get practice tests (there is a link to limited examples in the email). Thanks, much appreciated.

Thanks for that. The OPC website has a SCAAT (Safe Concentration & Attention Test) example, searching for certain letters in a block. A Practice Transport Verbal Reasoning Test example, which it recommends for the RAAT (Rules Acquisition Aptitude Test), multiple choice correct answer, from information in a paragraph.

But no example for the RVCE (Railway Verbal Communication Exercise). Speaking with a guard at Woking, today she had done hers a while back, but remembered an exercise with a statement read out twice, you made notes, then left for more than ten minutes, came back and were asked questions which you answered using your notes.

OPC sells full test examples at £9 each. I don't know if people see as worth it. But I don't want to turn up thinking it will be a walk in the park. We've all been at assessments where they call in individuals first and they're the ones who won't be going any further.

for me the Rvce test was the easiest all day. If it's still the same as 2019 and it sounds likely the guard at Woking is correct. You hear a recording from a driver to control room staying that the train had hit a car on a level crossing. The driver explains what had happened, where(or mile posts, signal numbers etc). Also the state of the train and that they had put detonators down approaching the train.
Just concentrate on the main points(bullet points),they are not looking for the make or colour of the car.!!!

I’ve done mine 2 weeks ago and it was exactly as @MiNi just said. Bullet points is your best friend for that part of the assessment. Focus only on the main information, what happened, the numbers/codes, what actions were taken before and after the accident, what the driver requires and in my case as I can remember no injured during the accident but British Transport Police would have to come to the place.

I’ve bought the tests and they we’re very helpful, specially in terms of knowing what to expect and practicing to be more accurate and fast. Accuracy is the key and practicing everyday you get faster and more used to the symbols. On the day of the assessment there will be 2 blank A4 sheets on top of the table, I used one of them to block the bottom line whilst I was crossing the one above and it helped me so much as you don’t get distracted by other symbols.

Have a look on the Group Bourdon Tool, you can print the pages and practice as well.
Good luck!

agree with favalessa. In mine I said that the damage to the train was minimal but we would need a locomotive to tow it out of the way and to call the BTP to attend the scene.

Can’t you practise SCAAT on the group bourdon tool pinned at the top of this forum section? Sure I remember doing it on there years ago.

Thanks everyone for their help. Been to Southampton for my metro guard assessment. As said first two tests were SCATT and RAAT. I brought OPC packs, and they are excellent. The actual tests were designed by them. If you done well enough then there was the verbal test RVCE, making notes and reporting back information heard. If anyone needs further information please let me know.

Thanks again all, now the hard part. The poxy STAR exams!
