I never knew they did the 58 - I assumed that was wholly Stagecoach.

In terms of regular services though - yes.

As a bit extra, yes, Coastal Coaches have indeed been stripped of their tender just over 4 months into their 24 month contract. It's a shame they declined so fast, after an exceptional start

The excellent Fylde Bus Blog has the answer; http://fyldebus.blogspot.com/2011/01/tendered-services.html.

I knew that my memory had not failed me - Blackpool Transport ran the LCC supported Evening/Sunday services Blackpool to Preston as the 758/158 from 2000 and then the 58 from 2004 to 2005. I remember they mostly used the Metro Coastlines "pool" liveried Deltas and Metroriders.

Some of that era was also when Stagecoach also weirdly ran the 58 service Preston - Blackpool - Poulton - Knott End, which was quite the trip end-to-end and if I recall, quite unreliable.

Although Blackpool Transport's furthest trip from home seems to have been service X54 in the 90s which ran through to Liverpool!

The first Wright StreetDecks have arrived at Preston, presumably to replace the Volvo B5LHs.

Preston Bus were originally due 8 x Streetdecks to replace the B5LH returning off lease, 40606-9 were then acquired, with 4 extra Streetdecks going in to Bolton instead.

The 4 x Streetdecks Preston are receiving were replacing 40619-40622 which were due to be returned off lease. It looks as though 40622 has since been acquired & is now for sale along with 40606-9 as well.

That is wonderful - thank you so much!

I do note their latest blog contains some potentially incorrect/missing information but no doubt it will be fixed in time. I'll also fire off a message using their contact form.

Here's a bit more nostalgia for you. A photograph of Blackpool's Leyland National 145 (previously 545, and originally Crosville SNL345) CFM345S at Swillbrook on the Poulton to Preston 180 service - May 1989.

Those the 2013 B5LHs?

It's sadly par for the course with the earlier hybrids as batteries have become degraded and their replacement expensive. Many have been withdrawn and scrapped (Wright HEVs), First have a batch of e400Hs that haven't worked for two years in Bath (save a couple), and East Yorkshire and Go North East have converted e400Hs and B5LHs to diesel power. Not a cheap exercise.
It's more cost effective to get them converted to diesel than buy another battery. I believe EYMS have done a lot of conversions for other operators at this point.

Bit before my time, but very interesting! I do know the 180 existed, think there was another 180 running East at one point.

As a little tip you can drag the picture to make it smaller and less intrusive.

Anyway dragging back on topic Preston Bus had 28 services in February 2020. They've been stripped of 11 of them since - nearly half.

Having seen the 74 and 75 routes confirmed I can safely say the 74 will not last, and concerns hang over the 75 route but at least it's a serviceable one.

The 74 avoiding Ashton is the local bus equivalent of TPE deciding to run non-stop through Leeds.

EDIT: After further reading the Blackpool Transport map does not correspond with the bustimes.org timetable, casting further confusion as to what route the 74 will take.

Well. It's been the first week of Blackpool Transport's time in charge of the 74 and 75, and I've been told some key points:
  • The 74 cannot keep to timetable, due to navigating some turns in the sticks and due to the new Palladium buses' performance in general
  • The 75 has launched well, as the route has not changed too much.
  • Teething issues with onboard displays, wifi and tracking.
  • Blackpoool Transport are overall very happy and the reception has been good. A timetable adjustment I feel is needed for the 74 as well as more adjustment overall.
The fact that Blackpool Transport have been openly transparent about this and are taking on all feedback is very encouraging. They are demonstrating exactly how to run a bus company.

Much appreciated Yorkie. Apologies for the late update from my phone at night but it is what it is and I can issue a more thorough update in the morning.

According to the (at least on mobile) bustimes.org site, the aggregation of bus times from gov.uk, the 31 and 44 are due to end this Sunday, with no buses scheduled past this date.

Meanwhile the services 16 and 89 are due to merge into service 100, yet the 16 and 89 show times after the merge date (Monday)

The merge was confirmed and brought to the public attention by Blog Preston earlier in passing in another article. The changes were made available on gov.uk on the 12th July.

None of this is mainstream knowledge yet. So my question is simple... What is going on at Rotala!?

E: will add quotes in the morning from Blog Preston, as you can imagine the situation is developing and confusing, and no doubt more will emerge tomorrow

On the plus side, while no one may know if their bus is running next week, the Exact Fare Policy is now being withdrawn with vaults being removed and cash handling being installed on the buses. (Probably the same Blog Preston Post)

Preston Bus has announced a range of new improvements to its service to help encourage passengers post-lockdown.

Beginning Monday 26 July, Preston Bus is permanently scrapping its exact fare policy for customers. Currently, passengers using the services either have to pay using exact change or face being overcharged.

During the pandemic, Preston Bus spoke with customers and frontline colleagues to gain feedback.

Passengers said that the exact fare policy has deterred customers from travelling with the operator. Combined with the recent introduction of contactless payments, the service has now completely removed the barrier.

Preston Bus Managing Director, Bob Dunn, said: “I am pleased to have acted on this feedback, which we have received loud and clear from our customers.

“We are currently in the process of fitting equipment to buses to allow us to give change and will shortly be commencing the removal of the cash vaults, which were introduced when conductors were removed from the services. From Monday, our drivers will be ready and willing to issue change whenever required.”

The news follows the announcement of a new cross-city bus route in Preston. The current 16 (Farringdon Park) and 89 (Larches via Docks) will be combined into one route cross-city, allowing passengers to travel directly across the city centre without changing buses.

The route will be numbered service 100 in recognition of it being 100 years next year, since the commencement of Preston’s first motor bus services.

Buses will operate up to every 10 minutes from Farringdon Park via New Hall Lane, Stanley Street, calling at Preston Bus Station, then Fishergate, Hartington Road, Portway P and R, the Docks area, Pedders Lane to Larches. All the usual stops in the city centre will continue.

The maximum £2 fare within Preston will also apply to the new service, meaning that travelling from one side of the city to the other is now cheaper, as customers will only have to pay one fare. Lower fares are also available for shorter journeys, and buses will operate more frequently on Sundays.

Thomas Calderbank, Commercial Manager for Preston Bus, said: “The new Cross City 100 service is an exciting innovation to open up the city through new direct bus routes.

“Passengers at Farringdon Park will now be able to shop on the docks or get off the bus on Fishergate, while residents at Larches will have easier access to places such as Gala Bingo and Lidl on New Hall Lane. We will be monitoring the usage closely and making further changes in response to customer demand and feedback.”

It has been announced that a new cross-city bus route will be introduced in Preston, the first of its kind for many years. The current 16 (Farringdon Park) and 89 (Larches via Docks) routes will be combined into one cross-city route allowing passengers to travel directly across the city centre without having to change buses. The route will be numbered service 100, in recognition of it being 100 years next year since the company’s first motor bus services commenced.

All the usual stops in the City Centre will continue to be served. The maximum £2 fare within Preston will also apply to the new service, meaning that travelling from one side of the city to the other is now cheaper than before, as customers will only have to pay one fare. Lower fares are also available for shorter journeys, and buses will operate more frequently on Sundays.

New timetables have been published for the services due to end on Sunday so these will continue as normal.

All in all a shambolic situation to let it run this close.

What differences can you see? All that I can see is that Preston Bus Station will be open for longer and therefore buses will stop in the interchange until 10pm.

The services that were slated to end on Sunday have been extended through until the next timetable change, which was the big concern.

Buses have remained in the interchange until 10pm for a while, just undocumented. This led to me nearly missing a bus not too long ago.

I'm looking on bustimes and I can't see any timetable changes for past Sunday on the services. Is it Saturday or Sunday timetable changes only. I know you say it's been extended but no differences.

Strange. I'll take another look in the morning and do some comparisons
