Hi can anyone provide clarification on routes permitted with a Preston to London any permitted ticket- as I understand the following routes would be valid:-

- Preston to London Euston on direct train via Crewe, Rugby or Birmingham

- Via Birmingham change at Birmingham New Street then VT to Euston

- Via Manchester change at Manchester Piccadilly then VT to Euston

Now unsure about the following but think some may be valid from what I have heard

- Via Bristol change at Bristol Temple Meads then FGW to Paddington

- Via Birmingham change at Snow Hill then Chiltern to Marylebone

- Via Leeds Northern Rail change at Leeds then EC to Kings Cross

- Via Manchester TPE then Leeds TPE change at Leeds then EC to Kings Cross

The main reason is that often have to work in one of these cities then travel on to London so wanted to check if the single/return ticket covers these journeys when breaking journey the same day outbound and at any point up to 30 days validity on the return to Preston.

Thanks,

From what I can see in the Routeing Guide.....

- Preston to London Euston on direct train via Crewe, Rugby or Birmingham....

Yes, direct trains are always permitted.

- Via Birmingham change at Birmingham New Street then VT to Euston....

No problem there either.

- Via Manchester change at Manchester Piccadilly then VT to Euston....

Permitted.

- Via Bristol change at Bristol Temple Meads then FGW to Paddington....

No. You could go via Reading to Paddington, but not via Bristol.

- Via Birmingham change at Snow Hill then Chiltern to Marylebone....

No problem.

- Via Leeds Northern Rail change at Leeds then EC to Kings Cross....

You could go via Leeds, but it would have to be via Burnley and then to London St Pancras via Sheffield and Leicester.

- Via Manchester TPE then Leeds TPE change at Leeds then EC to Kings Cross....

No. You could go via Manchester to Sheffield, but no further east. From Sheffield it would have to be down to St Pancras.

I've not look at any maps for this, but that doesn't seem like it should be valid, also I put it in to the National Rail Enquiries website and it requires two separate tickets.

FWIW, you could also travel to Burscough Junction, then after walking to Burscough Bridge, continue on via Wigan and Warrington.

Also permitted would be Preston - Warrington - Chester - London, on maps CL+EJ.

Pretty much all the Birmingham services from Preston go on to London Euston, so no change required at New St.

@ hhf many thanks for the comprehensive response...all makes sense and for Bristol at least ticket covered as far as Birmingham

I guess the same logic applies when using a season ticket and also whether travelling in Standard or 1st Class?

@ snail...do they..I thought most trains from Preston to Birmingham New Street were direct services but only as far as Birmingham apart from the occasional service that continues on to London from there?

Thanks,
