I need to dispose of a quantity of regional railway books (not trains), about 40, East Midlands but other parts also. Any ideas how? Recycling doesn't count as an idea

Donate them to a preservation society or heritage railway. They can then sell them on stalls.

I have a crate of old Buses magazines, which will one day find their way up the road to the group that runs a preserved bus and quite literally sets out their stall at rallies and events. Even if they don't want the hassle of selling them directly, they can sell them as a job lot to the traders who also attend such events.

Your nearest are the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, the Eden Valley at Warcop and the Stainmore at Kirkby Stephen, but I would check first whether they are interested. Some lines don't have sales space for much second-hand stuff.

Facebook marketplace, or Ebay. You can put a price of zero on marketplace if you just want them to go to a good home.

thanks folks, is good suggestion about preserved lines, have mixed feelings about Lakeside & Haverthwaite, seems to be a purely tourist operation, but the Kirkby Stephen one might be an idea. Oxfam is possible also.

Oxfam do seem reasonably organised with books - they have a few specialist bookshops (I don't know your part of the country, there's one in Reading but that's not a lot of use to you) and they do sell some books online if they are collectable or specialist.

Alternatively, if you are in the area they cover at some time you might ask if the local library service is interested. They are unlikely to want them for stock, but they might put them out to sell for a pound or two: being local they might get a ready sale.

After my father died I had to dispose of several book-cases worth of his books that I had no space to accommodate. Over a few weeks I took them into my local Oxfam bookshop (separate from their "normal" shop), and based on the gift-aid notifications I received from them, in total they must have realised four or five hundred pounds. These were mostly normal novels and non-fiction that he'd acquired in his lifetime, the only notable ones seemed to be some fairly early (but not first-issue) Penguin paperbacks from pre WW2.

Have you tried Gumtree .. easy sign-up and no fees to pay.

You can even list them for free, if you just want rid of them

I'd support that from more modest experience (at Skipton) - these days they have specialists who will I think look at stuff taken into ordinary Oxfams too. A far cry from 50 years ago!

As you say they are East Midlands Area relevant , i would be happy to collect them and take them to the Archive of the Industrial Railway Society at Statfold Barn Railway . Publications they need or want would go into the archive and any duplicates they would sell to enthusiast at the various open day events and use the moneys to further the aims of the Society and its amazing archive
Just a thought !! . Happy to help
