Queens Park / Bakerloo operational question during disruption

Just curious really!

I was waiting at Queens Park on Tuesday 9th December around 9am and there was a developing signal failure at Waterloo

When I arrived it seemed like a tube from the north had just terminated there as the platform was packed. Then a tube went through platform 2 southbound ECS

A packed tube then arrived and departed so decided to await the next empty from the shed

In the meantime another train arrived in service from the north but terminated into platform 1 and then set off southbound

Then another train appeared on Platform 2 but carried on ECS (lots of frustrated commuters by this point!)

Finally boarded another packed train that came through in service from the north

  • Where were the ECS moves heading southbound actually going?
  • I guess their disruption plan is to thin / split the service at Queens Park?
  • Is platform 1 a usual move for a tube train - usually only see Overground there

It looks like the same thing happened again today, I saw a Bakerloo Line train in the platform at Kilburn High Road about 0830.

The fourth rail extends as far as Kilburn High Road, where a tube train can reverse, so I assume this one had done that. Does anyone know why?

According to my Quail map a train arriving in Queens Park platform 2 (the normal platform for southbound Bakerloo line) can continue into the Tube tunnel or into one of the car sheds, but can't return northwards from this platform (except maybe by reversing in the tunnel, which I should think is frowned on). If the tunnel is blocked and the sheds are full then electrification onwards to Kilburn High Road means any further Tubes can run through platform 1 to use the crossover at Kilburn HR. They can then return northwards to provide a short working passenger service towards Harrow or stable in Stonebridge Park depot.

Depending on where the LU/NR system boundary is, it may be that a failure of the LU signalling or power supply also prevents trains getting into either platform 2 or the sheds, in which case Kilburn High Road offers the only escape route. In either case having this available should mean that the Overground service can still run even if the Bakerloo Line is out of service.

Somewhere, not in London
As other have said, you can run through Platform 2 southbound into the South Sheds, and with an excess of trains on the north end of the line and the amount I'd seen heading into Stonebridge Park one can safely assume this was to stable up as Paddington cannot accomadate that many reversals.

Platform 1 does indeed head down to Kilburn High Road and this is routinely used for reversing a Bakerloo train for test runs and during engineering works.

The RR to Kilburn High Road was always the first to go for the slightest of late running on the Bakerloo or the LMR.

All Kilburn High Road reversers needed a second man until a few years ago due to lack of trainstops at Kilburn High Road. Delays used to be further exacerbated by trains having to wait at Queens Park for them to materialise. Same for reversing at Willesden Junction and shunting back into Stonebridge depot from the up platform. I believe all Bakerloo line moves are now provided with trainstops, with the exception of Wembley Central which is operated by groundframe and controlled by handsignallers. I can also confirm there is no reversing point in the tunnel south of QPK until Paddington.
