Afternoon,

I just wanted to query TOC jobs that have part time hours.

Virgin have just advertised for a part time train manager working out of Holyhead. I've seen quite a handful of part time jobs advertised over the last few months with Northern as well. As someone who has applied numerous times over the last few months I would be happy to consider a part time role as it's still a foot in the door!!! Money really isn't a major issue for me at present.

Are there any railway buffs on here that can advise me how the part time hours work? Do you work full shifts as normal or are they usually reduced hours (for example just working a four/five hour shift)?

I can't comment on Virgin or Northern but for some other TOC's it is AM or PM Peak working. Usually 4/5 hour shifts over 5 days, Mon - Fri. There could also be local agreements in place which means it could be anytime.

It's going to be for the busiest periods as you will provide extra support.

I've applied for part time hours, some were full shifts (ie 8hr 45 mins) doing either earlies lates or nights... some were set hours on set days of the week (ie 4pm-8pm Mon-Fri). It just depends.

Not necessarily, as it could work the other way around. For example, just weekend cover to bolster staff numbers for rest days etc. I know you weren’t saying it’s the same wherever you go though. It really could be any hours, and it’s unusual for the adverts to not at least give an incline as to what said hours are other than just the amount per week.

Can anyone advise what Virgin’s standard working hours are? This job advert says it’s 20 hours a week, pro-rata, and gives the full-time salary. Is it based on a 35 hour week or 37.5? Or something else?

Tm are 41 hour week but you can be rostered up to 50 hours in a basic week sometimes more as rosters are agreed locally
