Are CSAs required to sit in the front of the train and operate the doors from there? On my last trip, the train was packed and the CSA took up two seats unecessarily.

No, they usually walk through the train and operate the doors from the control panels adjacent to each door.

But, if the train is crowded, they obviously can't walk through easily so if they've got any sense they pick somewhere and stay put. It doesn't have to be the front, it can be any door, but it may be that if its rush hour they prefer to sit at the front and use the mirrors on the platforms rather than sticking their heads out of the doors and trying to cram themselves back into the carriage when the doorways are already full of standing passengers.

At between some stations, yes, I have been told by a CSA that this is necessary for a few different reasons.

SDO was one of the reasons.

Even when the train is next to empty.

Another reason for the PSA sitting up front is when the computers have a sulk and they have to drive the train (or they're in a depot)...Though I admit it's been a while since I've seen one have to open up the right-hand panel.

Cheers,

Yes but isn't that what Train Conductors do on certain trains where they don't have a cab to use - ie the Electrostars?

But they don't have the choice of sitting at the front out of the way when it's busy, do they? ;p
