Just wondering if anyone who has access to the NFM might be kind enough to post up the fares for these tickets - do they work on a zonal basis like the Rail&Sail deals to Ireland?

Specifically I'd like to know the fare from Armadale(Skye) to Glasgow via Mallaig.

(And another question while I'm at it.... With an off-peak return London<>Inverness are there any restrictions on the trains I can use leaving Glasgow on a Wednesday morning?)

No.

There are no through fares for Origin ARMADALE RAIL-SHIP and Destination GLASGOW QUEEN ST. See Caledonian MacBrayne's fares booklet for Armadale - Mallaig fares.

It depends. Not for through travel, but if it's resuming a journey after a break for one or more nights, we need to know whether it's the outward or return leg, and whether it's the morning after the last day of validity for that leg.

Hmm...the Scotrail website suggests otherwise -

Which routes can I travel on?

* Available for Standard Class travel from any station in Scotland to and from the following destinations:
o Craignure (Mull) via Oban
o Castlebay (Barra) via Oban
o Lochboisdale (South Uist) via Oban
o Armadale (Skye) via Mallaig
o Stornoway (Lewis) via Inverness (Scottish Citylink coach from Inverness to Ullapool)

It's on the return leg, and would be resuming after an overnight break in Glasgow. It would be well within the validity period of the ticket.

(I think I should have said "Super Off Peak Return" actually - the one that costs around £125-£130)

Looking at The Manual, the add-on to Armadale (NLC: H334) is £3.85 Single or £7.70 Return on top of the relevant fare to/from Mallaig, and Railcard discounts are NOT available, so it may be easier for it to be issued as separate tickets for the rail and boat legs.

If you're travelling in Scotland for more than that journey, why not use a Freedom of Scotland rover?
The 4 in 8 is £114 without a railcard discount, and includes CalMac ferry travel to and from Skye. (I think it's valid on most, if not all CalMac ferries).

I may have completely misunderstood the question though (It's been a long day ).

I've priced this up a few times, and it seems difficult to buy the Armadale add-on with an Advance fare, so I've always just bought the ferry ticket at the CalMac terminal.

Having looked at the CalMac fares linked to upthread, I see there's no advantage in buying a through ticket anyway, apart from not having to queue to buy a ticket at the terminal.

If you're returning within 5 days, CalMac offer a 5 day Return for £6.55 (15% discount), whereas the Return add-on is the same price as 2 Singles.

Cheers,

Thanks for the suggestion but I won't be making nearly enough journeys in Scotland to make the rover ticket worthwhile.

Sorry about that. Yet another case of the info in the public domain (the NFM 06 CD) not matching the private info within the industry (The Manual).

The £124.50 Super Off Peak Return Inverness - London Terminals has Restriction 1K
Restriction 1K said:
Return travel NORTHBOUND – by any train scheduled to DEPART:
London Terminals (except as shown below) Between 0929 and 1457 inclusive & at or after 1859. Also allowed at or after 1815 on Fridays only.
London Euston At or after 0905.
You won't find any of these restricted trains in a morning in Glasgow, so the effect of the words in the Restriction is that you can take any Glasgow - Inverness train.

ah sorry, I should have been more clear in my original post - the return leg is the southbound one. What I'm wanting to know is whether there's any restriction on the Glasgow to London trains on a wednesday morning. (Having travelled Inverness to Glasgow the preceding evening)

Return travel SOUTHBOUND – by any train scheduled to ARRIVE at or after:
London Terminals (except as shown below) 1117.
London Euston 1005. Also valid on all First ScotRail Caledonian sleepers (with supplement).
In addition, you need to comply with the rules on overnight break of journey.
Restriction 9F said:
BREAK OF JOURNEY
Break of journey is allowed on Super Off-Peak tickets unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's validity code.

Super Off-Peak Singles and the outward portion of Super Off-Peak Returns are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket. Where a passenger wishes to stop overnight or the journey cannot be completed within one day, break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey continues into the next day, travel must resume before 1200 and any relevant time restrictions apply (except where regarded as an unbroken continuation of the previous days' travel where the first connection of the day may be taken). No further break of journey is allowed except for the purposes of changing trains.

Please note that break of journey is not permitted on some journeys, as detailed in in the ticket restrictions.

Apart from the fact that Armadale has three different NLCs (0990, 9067, and H334 which seems to be used for most of the fares), there is a peculiar problem with it in that the fares all seem to be set up in the Avantix data as for a single direction only. I.e. there are prices for a return from anywhere in Scotland to Armadale and back, or a single to Armadale, but there are no prices listed for a return starting from Armadale, or a single from Armadale to anywhere else. All the example fares listed on the page on the Scotrail website mentioned above are there in NFM06 and work fine (and indeed Castlebay, Craignure, Lochboisdale and Stornoway also work when used as origin points); it's just fares *from* Armadale as an origin that are the problem. NFM05 is the same. Is it a mistake?

But if you're paying more than £114, then you might as well.

As far as I know, an all-scotland rover ticket isn't going to get me from London to the border and back.

OK, thanks; that confirms that I will be fine because I don't need to get back to London before about lunchtime.
