Rail vouchers on ebay - legit or not?

There are rail vouchers for sale on ebay. More precisely the sellers seem to be selling the actual accounts that have the rail vouchers in them.

They have a discount off the face value of the vouchers.

Smells a bit fishy but on the other hand I like a discount if there is no risk (eg paying with paypal gives protection).

Any thoughts?

Rail Travel Vouchers have written on them that they are "non-transferable". This means that it is not permissible to buy, sell, give or receive them to or from another person and that if this is done, they are not valid for use.

Of course, in practice the only way the transferance would be discovered is if the member of staff who you'd given the vouchers to asked to see proof of ID to see that you are the person to whom the voucher is named as being issued.

I would be pretty sure that, unless they are specifically designated "gift" vouchers, they will also be non-transferable.

Also if this is a scam you'll get no protection from eBay as technically you're not supposed to sell electronic vouchers, codes etc on their site.

In which case, buy, use the voucher, then tell ebay nothing has been delivered. Get refunded. BOOM!

That won't work as the money back guarantee also won't pay out if virtual products aren't delivered.

It depends on whether the ebay computer detects that nothing is meant to be posted. Normally it will automatically refund if the seller doesn't provide a tracking number showing "delivered". I have purchased amazon codes for below face value many times and not been scammed (yet)

I wouldn't try that. For a start PayPal (if you claim with then) will likely suspend your account for that.

Many vouchers sold online are purchased using stolen cards or card data and this is a convenient way to get cash out of them.

Only purchase if you are happy to fund criminals.
