Although don't be surprised if Mersey Rail aren't really helpful. As officially it is the passengers responsibility to check their tickets are correct.

I`ve often wondered about that one, what do they have in place for partially sighted or blind passengers?

Legally it does remain the passenger's responsibility, although you would expect common sense to prevail.
