Hi guys,

When you buy a ticket to Reading or Reading West, you get a ticket that says READING STATIONS. I was wondering if this includes Tilehurst as it is a suburb of Reading

Many thanks

I am afraid not. Tilehurst is seperate despite being part of Reading. I am sure that there ar emany more examples as well.

When I first travelled to Swaythling I just bought a ticket to Southampton, after assuming that as it is in Southampton it's the same thing! And of course, in many cases the ticket would be just as valid to Swaythling anyway.

Is there a particular reason for your question? If you're asking whether a ticket to "Reading Stations" can be used to Tilehurst, then the answer depends on where you're coming from. For example from Bristol or Oxford, it could, but not from London or Newbury - though you could obtain an overdistance excess to Tilehurst for only a few pennies which would make it valid.

As Greenback says, there are loads of examples - "Birmingham Stations" for example! Or Earley and Winnersh in Reading.

Hi, I am coming from Newbury. The reason why I ask is that I am a railway enthusiast and Tilehurst is on the GWML after the Reading avoider, thus you get plenty of freights. I was only wondering really as it would of been nice to be able to go to this part of the GWML fore the same cost as going to Reading.

Many thanks for your time

Fraid not in that case, you'll need the Tilehurst ticket (£6.40 Cheap Day Return).

Interesting avatar choice BTW...

Now. Tilehurst was in the Reading group for ticketing purposes until 1988. Back then it was known as READING BR.....

Interesting, I didn't realise that. Do you know why, or when exactly it was taken out?

Thanks. I wonder if that was the same time that NSE as was decided to overhaul its fares policy? One of the results was Network Awaybreaks!

Interesting. Could that have any relation to the following Easements?

Customers travelling from Cholsey via Didcot Parkway in possession of tickets routed 'Any Permitted' may travel via Reading. This easement applies in both directions.

It seems a little odd that if I travel from Cholsey, only one stop east of Didcot, I'm allowed to travel all the way to Reading and back, whilst from Tilehurst I cannot! Of course if Tilehurst were part of Reading stations then it would be permitted without an Easement...

OTOH 1988 would be quite some time before the Routeing Guide was drawn up so I could be talking nonsense as normal.

Don't forget that ticketing groups are not the same as routeing groups.

I don't think so. The Group Stations rule does not apply where the origin or destination stations are part of [the relevant] group.
