If you look at any freight train on RTT, the headcodes are always nonsense like 621T for instance, on today's Valley Nuclear Electric to Crewe Coal Sidings (DRS). Where do they get these headcodes from and is there any way to find the real headcode?

They are randomised by NR at source of the public feeds to prevent you seeing the real headcode, at the request of some of the FOCs.

The exception is GBRf who requested theirs to be unscrambled. I believe this may be because GBRf crews use RTT/OTT on mobile devices for their work.

If it's fine for GBRf then I don't really see an issue for anyone else - it's not like it's top secret who is operating the train!

I can tell you that the service in question was 6K41 and it was worked by 37603 + 66305 and I don't have access to any internal systems. The information is out there......

It is important to note that even with scrabled headcodes the first number is always correct. For example 654T which could be 6V00, and 703X could be 7C06
By this you can tell what load it is without needing the real headcode
The rules are
0 - light loco, 1 - express passenger + 1Z99 recovery, 2 - Slow passenger caroline service, 3 - specially authiorised workings and departmentals, 4 - fast freight and intermodal, 5 - ecs, 6 - freights mainly aggregates and ballast, 7 - 45mph freights, 8 - even slower freights and some departmentals, 9 - STP workings and high speed services and some other special authorisations,

Not quite as black and white as that
1-exp. pass, 1Z99 and some departmental I can't remember what.
2-stopping pass and some departmental, don't recall what
3-special ECS or engineers'
4-75mph freight
5-ECS
6-60mph freight
7-45mph freight
8-30mph freight
9-formerly unfitted freight, but nowadays how long have you got?!
Places like Welsh valleys after disruption, Salisbury to indicate there's a 153 (can't go through P3), E*, ELL, VTWC to/via Brum, 10/455&455&456 workings out of Waterloo, I'm sure there's more
0-light loco

(Awaits being corrected)

in and out of St Pancras International, HS1 side, a 1xxx is a Southeastern HS service, a 5xxx is a Southeastern ECS , a 9Ixx is Eurostar Brussels service, 9Oxx is a Eurostar Paris/other French destination service and a 9S is a Eurostar ECS to/from Temple Mills

Maybe there should be a sticky topic about this, explaining each of the headcode classes, and in big bold H1 tags, "RTT shows obscure headcodes"

It's NOT RTT though, it's NR's data feed that scrambles them.

Good point about a sticky though.

Only today, according to GWR Journey Check, 1111 Westbury to Southampton and 1227 Southampton to Great Malvern shewn as cancelled and STP trains run in lieu due to being worked unscheduled by 153 and having to run as Class 9 due to the restriction at Salisbury

Its pointless having Class 9 officially defined anymore, it can be (and is) used for all sorts of things depending on TOC and situation.
