Maybe the wrong board, so please feel free to move mods.

For 2010 I am planning on logging all my trips by train and would like to tot up the mileage, but what is the best way? Is there some program available or somewhere I can easily get the mileage information of railways in the UK?

I know there are a few of you on here who also record your mileage so any help or pointers would be great,

I believe Mr. Cairns's RailMiles might well be the best thing for you then. Can't for the life of me remember the link but works off the CORE routing engine. Has recently been improved IIRC. Does come with a cost but appears to be worth it. Might even splash out on it myself this year :o

Looks pretty good, a snip at £10 for 5 years! May well invest myself.

Struggling to get mileage for London Euston - Inverness (Caledonian Sleeper) so thought id try London Euston to Edinburgh, then Edinburgh to Inverness, Nothing for London Euston - Edinburgh or London Euston to Carlisle!

I may well be doing something wrong but not got time to mess around with it now, so will look again tomorrow.

The Railmiles subscription currently uses CORE (Clives Online Routeing Engine) for it's data, which is complete. The link posted by John is a work-in-progress alternative for CORE that is more up-to-date and has additional features however it is not yet complete.

When it is complete, all subscriptions to Railmiles will change from using CORE to this new system (this will be done automatically). I am told it is a "matter of days" before the new routeing engine is complete.

Mileage info now available free here.

Thank you very much for that link, that has made my job an uncountable number of times easier. Got 12 months of moves to work out tonight, some of them via funky routes. That new engine saves me splitting the route up several times to get the correct mileage! :D

EDIT: As it includes the Tyne and Wear Metro, I'm going to FINALLY have accurate mileage for 17th January 2009! :D

Me thinks I owe Mr. Cairns a pint!

I'd cut the London Euston - Edinburgh down to London - Carlisle - Edinburgh first

Or just put Preston and Carlisle in the 'Force Route via' boxes? Haven't tried that but those boxes are incredibly useful.

Given that a lot of my journeys aren't on any of these online efforts (examples Doncaster to York via Selby, Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall, anything abroad), I prefer to stick to my printed publications for recording my distances. The series of Miles & Chains books are very handy, along with the Quail Maps, the Track Atlas of Great Britain, for preserved lines Stuart Clarke's Heritage Railways Miles & Chains book is a must and he has also produced various kilometreage books for various countries in Europe.

I am told it is a "matter of days" before the new routeing engine is complete.
It is reported elsewhere that is is now complete with the single exception of one line. That happens to be the line closest to my childhood home. What did I do to deserve that?!

If the project is as nearly complete as this, it would seem to cope with all scheduled passenger trains except:
0533 Edinburgh - Dundee 0713 XC (runs Mon - Sat)
2048 Glasgow Central - Edinburgh 2207 XC (runs Mon - Fri).
