At Bristol Parkway today around 1145 a red and white multiple unit very modern looking train with Metro branding went past on a line avoiding the platforms. Stopped just past the station, but I couldn't see any more detail.
Any idea what it was? I couldn't see anything that referred to it on Real Time Trains.

Probably related to the South Wales Metro.

The South Wales Metro in the UK has announced the arrival of the first Class 398 tram-train at the new Transport for Wales (TfW) depot in Taff’s Well.

Built by Swiss train maker Stadler, the Class 398 tram-train was delivered to the TfW depot after undergoing numerous trials at Network Rail’s Rail Innovation and Development Centre in Leicestershire.

They are running them to Swindon and back for milage accumulation and testing. Eventually they will end up on the Rhymney and Vale of Glamorgan lines.

Being they are testing on the twin track section east of Bristol Parkway, do they hold up the GWR expresses? How fast can the 756’s go?

Not well, max speed 75mph, but there is spare capacity via Hullavington, so it isn't a large issue
