Hi,

My first time on this site as I am a Real Estate student who is seeking inspiration for my dissertation.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any stations that have been restored and are now being used for something else?

Preferably not residential but for commercial and leisure uses.

My initial idea came from knowing of Barter Books in Alnwick's Station, and the regeneration of Richmond Station, but I am finding it challenging searching for more online.

If anybody knows of any that I could search for in more detail, that would be extremely helpful!

Many thanks in advance.

A few to find out more about - Bath Green Park, there is mention on the GWR electrification thread of Moulsford having been converted to social housing, there is the Manchester Central station, Cocking or Singleton (sorry can't remember which) is now the offices for a vineyard, there is Kew Gardens is now a cafe or pub and the booking office for the Wantage Tramway is now some sort of business. Drigg station was used as a craft shop but not sure if still open

Cheers

Pontrilas is a B&B and holiday lets (and there must be others in those categories).
Langwathby is/was a restaurant (station still open).
There are a number of other open stations where the buildings have been restored largely for non rail use - Aberystwyth Borth and Carnforth for example.

Thank you very much for your quick responses. I will look into all of these. Much appreciated.

If anyone knows of any restorations that have not been a success for any reason, these would also be very helpful to compare against and evaluate why they have not worked.

The old station building at Newport South Wales has been converted into offices.

Most of the ground floor and possibly parts of the other floors is Newport City Council's "Information Station", a "one stop shop" for public advice. Although the back of the building still adjoins Platform One of the station, there's no access to the platform from the building - except, possibly, in an emergency.

The thing is that it still looks the same as it was when it was a station .... I bet that they get a few train enquiries!!

Ramsgate Harbour station closed in the 1920's and became a seaside amusement arcade for many years.

Dover Western Docks (nee Marine) closed a few years ago and became a cruiseliner terminal.

St Albans London Road is pretty much intact and was converted to a business centre.

Shipley & Windhill station used to be a Scooter saleroom. Haven't been for a while so not sure what it is now. On Google street view in July it was a fencing and decking outlet.

Hawsker (on the former Whitby - Scarborough line) is now a B&B with some railway carriages being used and the station building I believe.

Oxford Rewley Road became a tyre depot too. Not sure if it's still there.

If you had the time, you could go through all the entries on the Disused Stations web site.

For example, here you can see a station which is now a school sports hall.

Whilst the station remains open, one of the buildings at Ferriby has been partily converted into a cafe of sort. Its quite common for elderly ladies to sit their in the summer and wave at the trains passing through

The former Stepney Station (Hull) is now a private residence but has served as offices, a house and even a Mosque!

Grindleford station building is a rather famous cafe.

One stop down at Dore and Totley was an Indian restaurant but I think it closed.

Newark Castle was a wine bar which also closed, but apparently is going back into railway use with a ticket office being reinstated.

Parts of Halifax station are an interactive science centre.

The most historic part of Bristol Temple Meads was a museum but I think has now closed.

Monkwearmouth station building is a museum but after several decades of closure the platforms were reopened for the Tyne and Wear Metro.

On the same network North Shields is an indoor market. The former station at Jesmond, replaced by a nearby Metro station, is a pub.

Plumtree is a rather good restaurant.

Penmaenmawr's station building has been a pine furniture store in the past, but is now disused once more (I believe).
