On an off peak return would returning via Leeds be a permitted route. only asking given the amount of cancellations from Euston on a Saturday.

Unfortunately not. You'd have to buy a ticket from somewhere east of Accrington for there to be validity via Leeds. Of course at that point you pick up LNER-set "via Doncaster" fares.

Thought so. Any suggestions as to which station but also allows via Preston or Manchester.

Burnley Manchester Road?
...is the furthest West station with cheaper VIA DONCASTER fares (but of course no returns). Looks like the ANY PERMITTED starting short at Rishton and a single for the last leg is your best flexible option (at least the connection at Accy works OK).

BTW is Oyster/contactless cheaper from EUS/KGX?

You can calculate this by comparing the through fare to Sutton, with the fare to London Terminals, and adding the appropriate PAYG fares.

The appropriate PAYG fares will depend on whether any Railcards are held/loaded onto Oyster, and the time of travel.

The through fare would, in contrast, be completely unaffected by any "peak" times between London and Sutton, as the only time restrictions are from the origin to London (outward portion) and London to destination (return portion).

If your concern is with Avanti or the west coast mainline, then you can use an "any permitted" Rishton-Sutton (or Rishton-London) ticket to go into London via Chesterfield, or via Birmingham and High Wycombe or Sl/ough.
