My son, home for the weekend, has the return portion of an Off-Peak Return Cardiff Central to Altrincham, which was supplied by his company. He wants to return direct to Cardiff Central from home (Parbold or Wigan stations) either tomorrow or Monday. We assume that he should join the route at Stockport but were wondering if he bought a single to Crewe from Parobld or Wigan he could join the route there and save a lot of time going over to Stockport. Is this a valid and quicker way of getting back to Cardiff? Thank-you in advance. In this case faster rather than cheaper is the primary goal.

If he's going to Parbold, it's quicker to change at Stockport - and it will be an easy cross-platform change. If he's going to Wigan, it's quicker to change at Crewe.

His ticket to Altrincham is technically not valid to break his journey at either Crewe or Stockport, but this restriction simply won't be enforced in any way, and your son should feel quite comfortable in just buying an additional ticket from Stockport or Crewe (depending on which route he takes).

He could try to get an overdistance excess to Parbold/Wigan at the ticket office (the fare is actually about £1 less than that to Altrincham!) but it's quite likely they will be unable to do so.

Break of Journey is only prohibited on the outward. As the traveller is returning to Cardiff this doesn't apply anyway.

Restriction code 8A was changed a while back to seemingly prohibit break of journey on both legs.

Of course, as previously stated, OP's son doesn't need to worry about this restriction.

When you get off the train at Crewe/Stockport there is no way for a putative inspector to discern whether you are finishing your journey to Altrincham early (which is not technically allowed) or whether you are simply deciding to change trains (which is perfectly permitted and may be required depending on the route you take).

Such inspectors don't check for tickets on exiting the train, anyway, they would be at the station barriers, which OP's son won't be passing through. As soon as they have left the train they can simply produce their onwards ticket to Wigan/Parbold if requested.

Thanks for the updates and yes based on the advice given that's the plan now... he will show the ticket relevant to that part of the journey if asked. This forum is so useful for answering these questions - much appreciated.

Routeing south of Crewe isn't mentioned, but with this ticket I don't believe there's any problem in routeing back via Birmingham and Bristol Parkway if desired.
No specific route is mentioned on the ticket (it used to be Any Permitted).

There is certainly no route mentioned on the paper ticket...
