Hi,

I have a friend who wishes to travel from Glasgow to Leeds on a Standard Open Return Ticket and he wants to stop off at Skipton Keighley and Bradford before going onto Leeds.

He has a senior railcard and has paid £36.55 for the ticket.

Is the route valid please ?

Thomas

Looking up ticket information on BRfares, the ticket that matches the price is this one, an Anytime Return (SOR) routed via Appleby.

The page states that there are no restrictions on the ticket, so you may break your journey as often as you like on the outward and return legs, as long as you remain on the correct route.

That just leaves the issue of whether the three stations listed are on a permitted route. Skipton and Keighley will undoubtedly be on such a route, but I'm not sure whether Bradford would be. I'll let people with more local knowledge, or the time to take a dip in the routeing guide, to cover that for you.

If not, then a Shipley to Bradford return won't be expensive.

Glasgow is a routeing point and Leeds is a routeing point. There are huge number (god only knows why) of mapped routes between the two however one of them is using only map GY Glasgow to Yorkshire via Hellifield. This map appears to show that there is a mapped route between Skipton and Leeds via Bradford. Therefore, in my opinion, the ticket purchased is valid for all journey that your friend wishes to make.

HI,

Thanks for that. I have looked at the routeing guide since I asked the question and I have reached the same conclusion as you.

Thanks again,

Thomas

Just bear in mind that the outward part of the ticket is only valid for FIVE DAYS (the first date of the ticket being counted as day one). So all travel to Leeds on the outward sector would need to be completed by the end of day five. Return travel can be within one month however.

However, please note that once your friend reaches Forster Square, he may not proceed to Leeds from there, as he would be doubling back at Shipley.

If he arrived at Bradford Forster Square, he must proceed to Leeds via Bradford Interchange.

I haven't checked the Routeing Guide, but imagine that a Shipley to Bradford return would be all that would be needed of your friend did wish to double back via Shipley.

Hi,

Thanks again chaps. I have confirmed with my friend that he is only going for the day to see some buses. He had said that he would like to do the 2 Bradford stations, so that works just fine.

Many thanks for your time and expertise,

Thomas
