Routeing via Woking and Basingstoke.

As I still can’t get into the Routeing Guide I have to ask a fairly simple question here.

Once the weather improves I need to go Woking and possibly Basingstoke from Ryde. The ticket will be a Day Return from Ryde Esplanade, route Wightlink, with a Senior Railcard. I would like go out via Haslemere to Woking, break my journey there, continue to Basingstoke and break my journey there before returning via Winchester and Botley.

My reckoning (calculated off the winter 1959 timetable) is that Farnborough is the nearest station to halfway round the circuit. Can I buy a Day Return from Ryde to Farnborough and go out one way, with a stop at Woking, and back the other way? (The stop at Woking is the important one.) I wouldn’t stop at Farnborough, but presume that I must catch a stopper from Woking that does call.

While Farnborough might be half way, your proposed ticket is only valid via Winchester, as Woking does not pass the fare check to be considered a valid routeing point.

The most obvious ticket valid for your proposed journey is Ryde to Woking. Others may be able to find a better location to change from outward to return.

Routeing guide is at https://rgpp.iblocks.co.uk/reference-data

Maps PD & SW for Portsmouth-Woking which, I agree, seems the obvious ticket to get.

Just tried that: all I get is a blank page. Even by going through the National Rail site I got a banner, if nothing else.

So does this mean that if I bought a Day Return to Woking I would be permitted to return via Winchester?

It’s worth noting that on a Portsmouth Harbour to Farnborough ticket, it is valid via Woking, and would be valid to break your journey there. The only condition would be travelling on a train that stops at Farnborough as you mention.

I get this to cost £8 less if you buy your Wightlink ticket separately than a through ticket and both are undiscounted, but you should price this yourself as the fare scales on each vary.

Yes, I thought you said earlier that it wasn't valid:

Oh, I guess what you said is that the Ryde to Farnborough ticket isn’t valid via Woking.

Or, if you dont mind using the stopper from Woking to Basingstoke, get an Anytime Day Return from Ryde Esplanade to Brookwood for £40.95.

It's only £36.80 if you get Ryde Hoverport-Brookwood and use the hovercraft.

Interestingly, during peak times first class to Brookwood is not much more than standard class to Woking.

Basically, first rule of travel on SWR is never buy tickets TO Woking as they add a Heathrow premium to many tickets.

Handy tip that. I do travel to Woking on SWR reasonably often (on the way to Heathrow!) and wondered at the high fare.

Isn't the premium due to Woking being the western gateway of SWR's "golden corridor" to Waterloo?

Could be but given its only in one direction I assumed they were trying to rip off airport passengers as you may not notice the premium when the coach is added on.

Worplesdon also escapes the premium.

Not many times where the premium is so much that First Class is almost the same though. Total rip off.

Also crazy how much cheaper yhe Hovercraft can often be.

Often cheaper to pay to Guildford and the Railair bus separately. Or use the 731/730 from Basingstoke/Frimley/Bagshot

Thank you all for your advice. I will get a Day Return from Ryde to Brookwood and break the outward journey at Woking, then catch a stopper to Basingstoke and later back via Botley.
