On the coming Friday (5th June) I need to travel from Sawbridgeworth (SAW) to Hatfield (HAT), arriving at around 8, then from HAT to London King's Cross (KGX) around lunchtime. I have a 16-25 Railcard.

Is this journey valid with an Anytime Day Return, stopping short at King's Cross on the return?

National Rail Enquiries is a little bit confused, as the 'Other routes' section shows via King's Cross and Liverpool Street as valid, but when entering including interchange at King's Cross it says multiple tickets are required. Which one is right?

It's only £1.50 to use Oyster from Finsbury Park to King's Cross, so it's not a big issue, but obviously it would be handy to not have to get off the train to touch in.

Thanks in advance if anyone can shed any light on this!

I don't see why not.

Just search on National Rail Enquiries for a return ticket between Sawbridgeworth and Hatfield, via Liverpool Street, and it gives several options via King's Cross and Liverpool Street.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't start or finish your transfer at Tottenham Hale (on the Sawbridgeworth line) or Finsbury Park (on the Hatfield line), and there's a route via Moorgate too.

All Sawbridgeworth - Hatfield (Herts) tickets are routed +any permitted, thus an Underground transfer is included.

Sawbridgeworth is a related station to Cheshunt and the Stansted Group.

Fares check:
Sawbridgeworth - Hatfield (Herts) SDS £14.65

Cheshunt - Hatfield (Herts) SDS £11.15, less then the fare from Sawbridgeworth for Cheshunt is an appropriate routeing point.

Stansted Airport - Hatfield (Herts) SDS £19.65

Stansted Mfitchet - Hatfield SDS £14.65
http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=SST&dest=HAT&rlc=YNG&ldn=1&tkt=SDS
The Stansted Mountfitchet fare is equal to the Sawbridgeworth fare, so in my opinion the Stansted Group is an appropriate routeing point.

Hatfield (Herts) is a related station to Alexandra Palace and Stevenage.

Fares check
Sawbridgeworth - Alexandra Palace SDS £10.30
http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=SAW&dest=AAP&rlc=YNG&ldn=1&tkt=SDS
Less than the Hatfield fare, so Ally Pally is an appropriate routeing point.

Sawbridgeworth - Stevenage SDS £21.50
http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=SAW&dest=SVG&rlc=YNG&ldn=1&tkt=SDS
Greater than the Hatfield fare, so Stevenage is not an appropriate routeing point.

The only routeing permission for Cheshunt - Alexandra Palace is London.
http://iblocks-rg-publication.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/yellow_pages.pdf page 317

The only routeing permission for London Group - Alexandra Palace is KE.

Map KE shows: Alexandra Palace - Finsbury Park - London Group, amongst others.

Thus, the ticket is valid into Kings Cross as you desire.
