Senior Conductor - EMT

Hi. I'm new to this site and was wondering if anyone had any advice or info on Senior Conductor positions with EMT?

They are currently advertising for Senior Conductors at Norwich and I am considering an application. Does anyone have any inside knowledge on what they are like to work for? Is Norwich a good depot to work at etc?

I didn't realise they had a depot here and was holding out for a position with GA. I can see from other threads that EMT seem to be all about customer service, has anyone been through an interview with them and can offer any tips? (supposing I'm lucky enough to be selected for one.)

I can give you a bit of detail about the depot and it's work.

The work is easy enough, mostly consisting of working a fast train to Nottingham, doing some local work, then a fast train back. Some variations like working a stopping train to Nottingham or travelling over passenger.

Routes are Norwich to Nottingham via Grantham or Melton Mowbray (diversion), Nottingham to Worksop and Nottingham to Leicester.

Earliest book on about 0520, latest finish 0000 ish.

Traction is class 153/156/158.

It's a small depot, somewhere just over 10/15 guards, can't remember exactly how many, which makes getting annual leave at busy times a bit tricky and the work is a bit repetitive.

It's an easy life but if you're not very old and a bit ambitious expect to get bored after a while.

Thanks for the quick reply. It sounds like a small and friendly team then. I've put the application in, fingers crossed for an interview.

I am looking for a career on the railways but this seems a good place to start.

Believe they have a depot/mess room in a house down the road from the station, whereas we for GA have ours in a building adjacent to the station itself. Other than that I couldn't really tell you much, they keep themselves very separate from us on the GA side most of the time, I haven't heard anything bad!

Just some food for thought, something I've been mulling over. I've seen senior conductor adverts for various TOC's all seem to emphasise the customer service side of the role. Having been interviewed twice with one particular TOC the customer service aspect seems to be the bit they value least. Not saying it's not important but in my interviews I got the impression it wasn't top of the list.

Therein lies the paradox of the role of the guard/tm/senior conductor, 95% of your training will be safety related, 95% of on job time will be customer service.

Exactly, it's therefore the sign of a good guard that can effectively separate the two or indeed combine the two when required.

OP it would be good to demonstrate in interview that customer service comes naturally to you so you do not need to put too much effort into it therefore leaving you free to concerntrate on your safety duties.
