According to the April 1910 Bradshaw's guide, in addition to current services, there were through trains/carriages (some mentioned above) from St Pancras to:
  • Stranraer Harbour via the Port Road, linked by ferry via Larne Harbour to the MR's own subsidiary, the NCC, in Ulster, which ran connecting boat trains to Belfast (York Road) and Ballymena (the latter route was narrow gauge).
  • Heysham Harbour via the little NW line.
  • Manchester Central via the South District and High Peak lines, with some through carriages for Buxton
  • Liverpool (Central), both via Manchester Central and via West Timperley (some of the latter ran via Stockport Tiviot Dale and others via Cheadle Heath).
  • Blackburn, via Marple (Bridge), M/c Victoria and Bolton (Trinity Street).
  • Edinburgh and Glasgow, via the S&C and the Waverley/GSWR lines respectively
  • Aberdeen via Dundee, and Perth, via the Waverley route.
  • Bradford (both Forster Square via Leeds Wellington and Exchange via Halifax); there were also through carriages for Huddersfield.
  • Nottingham and beyond via Melton Mowbray.
  • Burton-on-Trent, via Ashby-de-la-Zouche.
  • Barking, with some extending to Southend-on-Sea via the LTSR
  • Cambridge and Norwich via the GER

Thanks for this, I was going to post that up to the First World War, that Blackburn had a direct train from St Pancras. Presumably it terminated at Blackburn and did not venture further into East Lancashire to Burnley and Colne.

As far as I know, this train was not reinstated after the war and remains Blackburn's only direct London service.

The LNWR also operated trains (4 daily on weekdays) from Colne via Blackburn, Bolton Trinity Street and Manchester Victoria to Stockport Edgeley, where they joined expresses bound for London Euston, and also 1 train per day from Bolton Great Moor Street via Eccles and the MSJ&A Castlefield line to join a London-bound express.

The MR trains from Blackburn to St Pancras ran 4 times daily pre WW1. The MR also made use of the L&YR's line from Manchester Victoria via Blackburn to Hellifield to connect with Scotch expresses there.

According to the Rev Awdry, Gordon ended up at St Pancras as well :)

One day, Gordon, Duck and a visiting engine were arguing about what the name of the big station at London was. Gordon thought it was King's Cross, the other engine believed it was Euston, and Duck believed it was Paddington, as he used to work there. Gordon became determined to find out what the name of the station truly was, and got his chance when the engine that was about to pull the train to London derailed. However, Gordon was saddened to find out that he arrived at St. Pancras

Thanks for that.... so before the First World War Blackburn had 8 daily London trains? Seems remarkable now, particularly as most of the Blackburn - Bolton line has been downgraded to single track!

I was aware of the Manchester - Scotland expresses going via Blackburn and Hellifield including sleeper trains I believe into LMS days.
