The suffix -wich in a place name indicates salt production. Pre-1974, Tintwistle was in Cheshire’s narrow ‘salt corridor’ which extended to Yorkshire at Saltersbrook Bridge to avoid tolls.

Oaksey Park House, a three-storey manor house, was built in the early 17th century, possibly for Sir Henry Poole, although it was demolished in 1956. Between 1604 and 1611, Sir Henry was the MP for Cricklade, the parliamentary constituency named after the town of Cricklade in Wiltshire.

The Tolworth Tower in Tolworth, completed in 1964, is a 22 storey office block (now to be converted to flats) designed by George Marsh of Richard Siefert's practice. As well as Centre Point and Space House in central London, Marsh also designed the Alpha Tower in his native Birmingham.

Although he was born in Anderson (sometimes known as Winterborne Anderson), Dorset, Lewis Dymoke Grosvenor Tregonwell (1758 – 1832) was an historic figure in the early development of what is now Bournemouth.
