Perhaps the most famous events to occur at Coniston were the world water speed record setting runs achieved Donald Campbell in Bluebird K.7. He died there when Bluebird suffered an engine flame-out, lost stability, became airborne and crashed during a further attempt, aiming to exceed 300mph, on 4th January 1967. Campbell, whose body was recovered in 2001, is buried in Coniston but was born in Kingston upon Thames.
